What does the future for trans folks look like?⁣ ⁣ Honestly, what I want most for trans folks is love. Safety. Stability. Abundance. Ability to thrive.⁣ ⁣ We have existed for centuries. Society has tried to extinguish our community, and too many of our siblings have been taken by anti trans violence. It’s hard to have hope in a world that tells us repeatedly we aren’t allowed to exist. Sometimes, hope feels like a privilege.⁣ ⁣ Maybe it’s less about what I hope will happen and what I want to happen.⁣ ⁣ I want the world to continue to grow and change in a way that lets us be whole and loved by more than solely ourselves. I want our voices to be heard, amplified, and honored in life— not only in death. I want us to be able to see ourselves reflected back at us in a way that emphasizes our beauty, our ability, and our vitality. I want us to be seen as more than simply our bodies, to be cherished for all of who we are.⁣ ⁣ I don’t think this is too much to want. I know we’re not quite at this place yet, that there’s still so much work that need to be done. Maybe some day we won’t have to work so hard to prove our humanity. Maybe some day, we’ll simply be accepted and supported. Until then, I know my platform (and the platforms of my friends) mean I have a responsibility to do what I can for my community.⁣ ⁣ Sometimes, though, I’m reminded that the things I want do exist in various pockets of the world. That community is strong. That there are good and loving people who care about trans folks, who are working for a better future for us. In a way, that’s what gives me hope. ⁣ ⁣ Thanks for listening today. May you all stay well and safe. And may you all continue to grow and learn and hold one another.⁣ ⁣ P.S. Here’s a short list just a few activists & leaders to follow!⁣ ⁣ @raquel_willis@chasestrangio@munroebergdorf@jmaseiii@steroidbeyonce@ashleemariepreston@hopegiselle@pinkmantaray⁣ ⁣ Also, some orgs to support if you can!⁣ ⁣ @mpjinstitute@theokraproject@transjusticefp@forthegworls@translatinacoalition

I hope that— of the many things folks might have learned this year— understanding allyship as a verb was one of them.⁣ ⁣ I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not an expert & don’t have all of the answers. My thoughts & feelings around allyship are from years in my own experiences, conversations in activist spaces, and listening to other folks.⁣ ⁣ So, what does allyship look like with trans communities?⁣ ⁣ First, I always think of allyship as being *with* not *for*. Cis people cannot fight for trans justice if they don’t really know what that looks like or means. Self-education is important, yes. And so is sharing what you’ve learned with your cis peers. You may not feel like you’re “allowed” to share what you’ve learned, and honestly, I can see why it would be confusing. You might be worried you’ll overstep or say the wrong thing. It’s also important not to rely on trans folks, especially Black & Indigenous trans folks of color to continue educating. Many of us often live our lives in a perpetual state of education.⁣ ⁣ Second, think about what is in your capacity to provide. Can you donate to trans folks or organizations? Can you attend workshops/ trainings & carry that education forward? Can you physically protect a trans person when they’re experiencing violence in any form? What are you *willing* to risk?⁣ ⁣ Third, know & understand the history of trans & gender expansive communities. The language we use now— transgender, gender binary, etc— is a product of colonialism & white supremacy. But, that doesn’t mean that these identities aren’t real. That simply means we’ve existed long before there were words to describe us. Know that Black & Indigenous trans women have long fought on the front lines for trans justice and liberation, and have continued to face the most explicit violence & harm. In fact, this is the deadliest recorded year for Black & Indigenous trans women.⁣ ⁣ These are just *some* things for cis folks to reflect on. Honestly, I ask myself these same things. What am I, a non-Black trans man who is read as cis, doing for my community? There are many, many ways to engage in allyship. Just remember that it is ongoing. And in many ways, never ending.

RE: medical transition & medicalization of trans bodies!⁣ ⁣ Some of the most common experiences trans folks share are being asked by cis folks about our bodies. And, when our stories are told on screen, they’re often centered on our medical transitions, rather than who we are as people. Why’s that wrong?⁣ ⁣ For starters, there are many types of transition. Medical transition is just *one* type! There’s also social transition (name & pronoun change, gender expression ) and legal transition (IDs & social security cards). ⁣ ⁣ It’s important to note that not every trans person chooses gender affirming services. ⁣ ⁣ Also! Such services are often inaccessible for many trans folks! Meaning, things like hormones or surgeries are not obtainable for some, either because of socioeconomic status or access to gender affirming providers.⁣ ⁣ Something that might seem obvious to some that isn’t so clear to others: asking about our bodies. While some trans folks who have had gender affirming care may be open & willing to share about that (like myself), at the end of the day, we’re also still human. Just like cis folks, we are deserving of the same amount of privacy. So, while you may be curious, it’s actually disrespectful to ask about our genitals & the surgeries you think we *might* have had.⁣ ⁣ Finally! I realize, for some, seeing pictures of trans folks share their medical transitions may cause confusion. If we’re so open about it, why would it be rude to ask? Well, they’re two different issues. For me, sharing milestones of my body, stems from pride in my journeys, as well as gratitude for the access I’ve have. I’m taking control of my own narrative, being an autonomous human. Asking invasive questions about our genitals, aside from being impolite, implies that you don’t see us as we are— that you care more about our body parts than us as whole humans.⁣ ⁣ Image description: a side by side photo of Leo at 18 years old, long hair over his face, immediately after top surgery. He's holding two thumbs up, wearing a black vest, in a hospital bed. The second photo is Leo at 24 years old, 6 years post top surgery, shirtless, green hat on backwards, and thumbs up. #TransIsBeautiful

Hi!⁣ ⁣ My name is Leo. You might know me as Micah from “The L Word: Generation Q.”⁣ ⁣ I’m 24 years old and I’m from Michigan, but I was born in China. I was adopted as an infant and raised by two incredible moms.⁣ ⁣ In 2017, I graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in sociology. Then I completed a year of grad school where I studied social work.⁣ ⁣ Currently, I’m an actor and writer. I’m also a movie buff, a pop culture trivia expert, and a dog dad. I’m slowly learning to cook. I can put a bed frame together in no time. Plus, I love the 80’s hits playlist on Spotify.⁣ ⁣ I’m also a proud and visible trans man.⁣ ⁣ Although I always knew on some level who I was meant to be, I didn’t always have the language to explain it— even with two moms. I came out when I was 12 and have spent the last 12 years further learning more about who I am.⁣ ⁣ Today, I’ll be on Jaq’s page, sharing a bit about myself— my journey and my story— for #TransTakeOver, in observance of #TransAwarenessWeek. I’ll be sharing some moments of joy, some reflections, and some of the hopes I have for my community.⁣ ⁣ Stay tuned!

I am so honored to be amplifying this intelligent, strong, thoughtful voice. @ileosheng is not only a pillar in the trans community but also a good friend of mine. I’ve been so fortunate to have him in my life for the past few years and I’m excited to be able to introduce him to all of you. (But let’s be real if you don’t know him yet you better get on it). As we all learned this year, it’s time to listen. It’s been time to listen. For #TransAwarenessWeek Leo will be taking over my page. Tune in tomorrow. You won’t want to miss it. Thank you to @ashleemariepreston for making all of this happen. #transtakeover #Repost @ileosheng with @get_repost ・・・ Another year, another #TransAwarenessWeek.⁣ ⁣ So, if I’m being totally honest, I haven’t really had the energy to craft a post this year. I’ve been sort of feeling like every year is the same thing: showing numbers and statistics, finding ways to maintain our humanity, all with some level of hope that cis people will treat us as humans. I guess, in a way, I’ve sort of been questioning the overall intentions, but mostly my own.⁣ ⁣ I still very much admire and respect the folks who continue to create and share thoughtful & educational posts. It’s still very needed. And, as tired as I am, I never want to be too tired to share in this work— work that is too often shouldered by Black and Indigenous trans and queer women, nonbinary folks, and femmes.⁣ ⁣ And, the more that I think about it, the more I realize that this year *isn’t* like every other year.⁣ ⁣ This year, we’re doing a little something new.⁣ ⁣ Thanks to @ashleemariepreston and her #TransTakeOver campaign, I’ll be taking over @jtoboni’s Instagram tomorrow, Wednesday 11/18! And we are just one duo of many this year!⁣ ⁣ I haven’t figured out exactly what the messages will be. As important as numbers and figures can be for some folks, I don’t want to have to rely on those for people to see the value of our lives. Ultimately, I hope to share some of my own thoughts and experiences, and that folks carry on their education and conversations and turn them into action. #transisbeautiful

#JUSTICEFORJACOBBLAKE #Repost @averyfrancis with @get_repost ・・・ It’s been confirmed. The Wisconsin cop who fired seven shots into the back of Jacob (Jake) Blake has been identified as officer Rusten Sheskey. Jacob survived the brutal attack but he is currently paralyzed from the waist down. Rusten held Jacob by the shirt and shot him seven times in front of his children. Rusten was the only officer to draw his weapon — he should be held accountable for his horrific actions. Arrest Rusten Sheskey for the attempted murder of Jacob Blake. Justice for Jacob Blake.

Let’s celebrate non-binary awarenesss week !! #Repost @alokvmenon ・・・ today is international non-binary awareness day! despite recent gains in visibility, our community continues to be misunderstood, scapegoated, and dismissed. we are accused of “making up” our identities when in fact the gender binary — the political division and regulation of billions of people into two, opposite genders — is a recent Western historical invention. we did not cross the gender binary, the binary crossed us. living a visibly gender non-conforming life is one of the most difficult things i have ever endured. i am constantly at risk. there are few places where i can look like myself without fear. i am made into a repository for everyone else’s projections. i am so exhausted, in so much pain. but it has also been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. i am part of a vibrant legacy of people who have persisted despite attempted erasure for hundreds of years, i have found beauty in so many places where i was taught shame, my friendships are deep & vulnerable, i know firmly & irrevocably who i am. gender and sexual diversity are fundamental parts of humanity. we are not the problem, the gender binary is the problem. it’s not enough to support non-binary people, all of us need to work together toward ending the gender binary. because of the ongoing project of disappearing being outside the ambit of western gender binary, information about non-binary people is sparse, absented from school curriculums and mainstream media. that’s why i wrote an accessible book for all ages called #beyondthegenderbinary ! i have been moved by how non-binary people have championed this book, but it’s also so important that cisgender people learn this information and join us in creating a world that values people beyond gender stereotypes. in honor of today: 1) please order a copy of my book (link in bio) & consider donating a copy to an LGBTQ youth. 2) share this post & tag 3 friends who could benefit from this knowledge 3) review the book on @goodreads & @amazon so more people can access this crucial information 4) request that your local library/school/bookstore stock the book

Pride month is coming to a close. For the next few days, I’d like to celebrate some of my favorite voices on IG. To me, this is the best Pride gift I could give — to introduce or re-introduce you to thought leaders, storytellers, activists, and all-around badass folx. • First up? @janayathefuture You may recognize Janaya Future Khan. They are a leading voice in the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as the international ambassador. They are one of the most incredible orators of our time. Period. Whenever I listen to one of their sermons, I come away with not just knowledge but an awareness in how I relate to the world. I posted this a few weeks ago, but if you are white and you are struggling to contextualize your feelings surrounding the movement or understand your place in it, please check out their talk posted on May 31 “what white people must know...A sermon on the project of whiteness” and then follow them and then watch the rest of their talks. We (white people) have a lot of work to do and this is a great place to start taking notes. They also host SUNDAY SERMON at 12 PST. Check it out. I’ll be donating to BLM in gratitude for this voice #janayafuturekhan
