Meet one of my heroes. Dr. Farrokhru Parsa was a physician, Minister of Education in pre-Revolution Iran, and the first female cabinet minister of an Iranian government. She was an outspoken supporter of women’s rights. Dr. Parsa was executed by a firing squad in Tehran on 8 May 1980, at the outset of the Islamic Revolution. In her last letter from prison, she wrote to her children: “I am a doctor, so I have no fear of death. Death is only a moment and no more. I am prepared to receive death with open arms rather than live in shame by being forced to be veiled. I am not going to bow to those who expect me to express regret for fifty years of my efforts for equality between men and women. 2020 retrospective: From being appointed as an @amnestyuk ambassador, to partnering with @amnestynz and continuing my work with @centerforhumanrights; from writing more op-eds to releasing my first docufilm #Stateless; from the Freedom House Awards to starting my Conversations on Iran series and learning from the likes of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Dexter Filkins... grateful for these opportunities to concientize and serve, that got me through an otherwise intolerable year. Let’s come back stronger than ever in 2021.

At a time when the world desperately needs its heroes, I’m devastated by the loss of pioneering Supreme Court Justice, women’s rights activist and icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Thank you for paving the way for us all. Rest in power. On how she’d like to be remembered: "Someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability. And to help repair tears in her society, to make things a little better through the use of whatever ability she has. To do something, as my colleague David Souter would say, outside myself. ‘Cause I’ve gotten much more satisfaction for the things that I’ve done for which I was not paid."

This means more to me than any acting accolade ever could. Thank you, #FreedomHouse and the Honorable Goli Ameri for helping me shine a light on #humanrights in Iran, #womensrights and the plight of refugees. My #FreedomAwards interview was recorded before the case of #NavidAfkari was known to the world. His execution by the Islamic Republic is a travesty of justice. This moment belongs to him and all brave protesters and activists in Iran, who risk everything for freedom. They are heroes.
