Allow yourself to be guided. Sometimes we feel like we have to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders alone but we don’t. ⁠ Sometimes the bravest thing is to ask for help when you need it. Lean onto a friend who can hold you and ask those you trust for guidance. It’s the same with meditation. Sometimes it’s the most powerful thing to be able to sit with yourself in complete silence and just be with whatever is coming up but often it is helpful, especially at the start, to be guided into a meditation practice. Your hips don’t lie. The song says it well - did you know that the hips are the emotional centre of the body? ⁠ The hips are often where unexpressed or stuck emotion is stored. During a yoga practice, there is often a big emphasis on opening the hips and this is for a number of reasons - firstly in society today we are often closing down this area of the body, sitting at a desk etc so it’s important to give the body counter stretches to bring it back into balance. Also if the hips are tight this can often spread throughout the entire body, causing back problems and knee problems, so again lengthening and opening the muscles around the hips can prevent muscle tension elsewhere. It is also important to begin opening and exploring what emotions might be stuck in there. Emotions are energy in motion, so if we begin to move our body, the stuck emotions can travel through us and release. What are your daily rituals? ⁠ We all have rituals and routines that we do throughout our day but often we are doing them un-consciously. Waking up and making a tea or coffee, washing ourselves in the same way, checking our messages and emails, watching the news etc.. but have you stopped to think about if your rituals or routines, especially those done first thing in the morning, are actually setting you up to feel good for the rest of your day? ⁠ ⁠ What if you could make a routine into a ritual by becoming present to what you are doing and turning some of these behaviours into things that set you up for a calm, more focussed day? ⁠ ⁠ Here’s a suggestion to get started - Don’t check your phone for the first 30 minutes after you wake up, make your morning cup of tea or coffee and sit in silence while you drink it in your favourite place and allow this to become a conscious time to check in with how you actually feel. Become present to the taste and smell of your drink and bring your awareness to your breathing. Maybe even this small change could make a big impact on your day.⁠ ⁠ You can also take this further and begin to introduce a short 10 minute meditation practice into your daily routine. AND BREATHE…. The power of our breath never ceases to amaze me. The way we feel is directly related to how we are breathing. Change the breath and the feeling will change. The teaching behind all mindfulness practices stems from the breath - bringing awareness to the breath and changing it in order to achieve a new set of sensations in the body. When we are stressed or anxious, our breath is short and shallow. When we are super relaxed our breath is long a deep. So by becoming aware of your breathing and changing it, you can empower yourself to change how you feel. Is anyone else finding it hard at the moment to stay disciplined? ⁠ Even when I know something is really good for me and I should be doing it all the time, there are times that my body just resists doing it? ⁠ When this used to happen to me, I would get pissed off at myself for my lack of internal strength and then not want to do it even more. ⁠ ⁠ But I've been trying to find a way around these times of internal rebellion - instead of being annoyed with myself I give myself compassion and try to figure out why my body is resisting. Have you ever wanted to hold onto a moment in your life? Something that felt so special that you wish you could trap that feeling in and return back to it over and over again? ⁠ ⁠ Someone said to me recently 'in those moments, you should find yourself an anchor', something that will hold that feeling in it so you can access it whenever you want. An anchor can be a particular kind of movement (maybe tapping a certain area of the body) or an object. PEACE AND BALANCE two of the things I think most of us wish we had more of in our lives. ⁠ These are the qualities of the gem stone Amethyst, which is also my birthstone. The physical postures of yoga are such a small part of what yoga actually is. I often get told by people that they don’t feel good enough, flexible enough or able enough to practice yoga but you can’t be anything enough for yoga. Yoga is for everyone. The meaning of the word yoga is actually Union. The images you see on Instagram of people contorting their bodies, are often of people who have been practicing for years and years, have a very high natural flexibility, ex-dancers, gymnasts or other very physical backgrounds where there has been years of previous work to getting to this point. But yoga isn’t about the external, it’s about union to your internal. To feeling, breath and connection to yourself. Yoga can be as simple as connecting to your breath. How are you feeling RIGHT NOW? Check in with yourself.⁠ We often get stuck worrying about what has happened in the past or about what might happen in the future and forget to get present to what we actually have right in front of us. If we allowed ourselves to live in the present moment, we allow for the future to be totally unknown. More possibilities open up. Where our attention goes, energy flows - so if you keep projecting your fears onto the future, your focus will be looking for those fears to come true. Focus on each moment as it arises and suddenly your focus is on enjoying this moment to the fullest. ⁠ How to get present? Your mind can take you into the past or the future but your body and breath are always present in THIS moment. One of the things I have loved learning about on my yoga journey is the incredibly complex and beautiful anatomy of the body. ⁠ We are all so unique and our bodies are such different shapes and sizes and we all have unique levels of ability. Learning more about the body has made me become even more fascinated by all the differences we have and teaching yoga and movement has made me look at different body types and wonder how to make a practice work and feel good for everyone individually rather than thinking that one size fits all. ⁠ For some reason, in society, we are told that we should all look a certain way and that way is actually unrealistic for most body types. Why not look at your individuality are realise that your differences are your super power… rather than seeking to change to be something you are not - how about focussing on changing to be who you want to be. That’s when things get exciting. Strip away the layers of comparison and self judgement and begin to notice the marvels of your individuality. Have you ever been to a place and felt like you had arrived home? ⁠ I've just got back from a week traveling around Sweden and Denmark and I had this strange feeling in both countries of arriving home. ⁠ I don’t have any connections to Scandinavia but for some reason I feel so comfortable, the people are so open and friendly and the way of life feels so easy. I have signed up for a 10 day silent meditation retreat and I’m a mix of terrified and excited in equal measure. ⁠ I’ve learnt over the past few years that the things I do that I am nervous about, are often the things that lead to my biggest learnings. Do you define yourself through your work? ⁠ Often the first question we’re asked when we meet someone new is ‘what do you do’? And we feel a pressure that the answer we give defines who we are as a person. ⁠ But what if we are much more than the work that we do? ⁠ As a creative, I used to believe that being creative or more specifically being ‘an actor’ totally defined me. I would get a certain reaction when I told people that was my job and then when I wasn’t working, I would feel a little bit lost and unknowing of how to define myself. ⁠ Then recently I started asking myself the question ‘who am I beneath that definition’? ⁠ And thankfully I came to a more exciting definition - I am Maude, a person who does a lot of things and keeps learning and evolving. Don’t underestimate the power of rest. ⁠ Sometimes I get caught up in the idea that staying busy gets more done, until I get to the point of feeling exhausted and then I have to rest. And then when I rest I become full of energy and new ideas and realise that actually if I had taken more rest in the first place, I would stay more consistently happy, motivated and creative. ⁠ Lesson learnt. I am currently lying on a beach and soaking up the sun and filling my body with rest and my mind with new ideas. Always planning! ⁠Yesterday I co-hosted a retreat day with my wonderful friend @joehouze called EMPOWER. I loved it and feel so grateful to be holding these retreats for people to discover new or old parts of themselves that maybe they’ve been ignoring. ⁠ My aim at the moment is to introduce as many people as I can to lots of different mindfulness techniques until they find one they love - and want to continue practicing daily. I don’t know much about crystals but I find them fascinating and beautiful and I believe they make me feel things in a heightened way. ⁠ I was given my first few crystals by friends of mine at times in my life that I needed support and holding these crystals did make me feel an inner strength. I also love giving them as gifts as I feel there is something magical in giving someone a piece of rock that has a meaning behind it - to give them the support they need in that moment. ⁠ ⁠ I realise talking about crystals is a little woo woo but I have started living my life by removing my pre-concieved ideas of what is NORMAL and acceptable and just trying lots of things with a open mind and continuing with the ones that make me feel good. Crystals are one of the many bizarre new additions that make me feel good. Along with mindfulness practices, defusing oils, writing lots, being surrounded by nature, dancing around to music everyday and singing continuously (much to the annoyance of my partner). Have you ever struggled with the feeling of being left out or not fitting in? From school age these feelings are something that we are made to feel ashamed of but actually it’s totally normal for humans to want to stay connected to each other and to fear being isolated. Over the past year, since changing my lifestyle up quite a lot, I have had moments of fearing being judged or not fitting into to the same groups of friends but I quickly realised that it’s ok to evolve and change and that people will fall in and out of your life depending on what aligns with you at these different moments. ⁠ ⁠ Some relationships in your life are formed because of circumstance, others are formed because you have a deep understanding of each other, others are for partying, some are for deep and meaningful conversations, others are there to pick you up when you’re down and some to bring constant joy into our lives…. none are better than others but some may align more to certain times of your life than others and that’s ok. I have let go of the fear of being judged and friendship dynamics changing as I have realised that by turning up totally as myself in every situation, I have been open to new kinds of relationships forming. Often deeper relationships with those around me already but also inviting in new friendships. Don’t be afraid of change in both yourself or the relationships around you. If you stay in that fear, then you don’t allow any room for growth and evolution. Stepping into the unknown internally, means opening up to a whole new realm of posibilities externally. This is a from the recent yoga class I led @lululemonuk Spitalfields store. They’re an amazing company who really encourage teachers to stand in their power and support them in doing so. ⁠ This year has been a year full of jumping into unknown’s for me, saying yes to all of the opportunities thrown my way that feel in alignment to my goal of finding a mindfulness practice that works for everyone. ⁠ Since I introduced yoga, meditation and healing into my life consistently, the changes in my self acceptance and inner confidence has been huge. I now feel I am able to speak my truth at all times, filter out the things that don’t feel good for me in my life, know how to nurture myself when I’m feeling low and generally live with more joy.
