Today is World Children's Day and November 20th has seen two important children's rights declarations. In 1959 the UN adopted the "Declaration of the Rights of the Child" and in 1989 UN General Assembly adopted the "Convention on the Rights of the Child." . We all play a role in making today relevant. Today offers us the opportunity to advocate, promote and celebrate children's rights. It is also the opportunity to create dialogue and transform words into actions. . So let's start the dialogue: How will you promote children's rights today? Any action, big or small, is important. As the new week presents itself, and we get back to the "daily grind", we are given an opportunity to start anew. Every morning for me is full of choices: Will I get to the gym early? Will I eat healthy? Will I make the time for those that I love even when it appears that schedules are packed? Will I execute that new pitch? It's easy to keeping doing what I've always done, but more rewarding to do what I've dreamt and never pursued. The act of letting go and moving is mimicked in the sunrise/sunset of every day... It's been a long journey home. A month on the road, quite literally, through #Nepal almost into China, back home, NY, and now back to Nepal. This travel is far from glamarous. Regardless, the experiences and moments along the way live with me forever. While we wait for the assignment to move into publication, here's an outtake from my first expedition to Mustang. #natgeo #onassignment #culture #adventure #exploration

We just wrapped our final day in Mustang, #nepal. Here are some words about the image I captured above from #NatgGeo #Explorer @jetbutterflies, who helped develop this story and assignment: . "A tantric mask rests on an ancient coat of armor in an unnamed ruin near the Tibetan border in Nepal. In Tibetan Buddhism, weapons of war and grotesque figures are used to scare away bad energy and ignorance. In the isolated Mustang region of Nepal, Buddhist culture is adapting to a number of unexpected changes. The opening of the region to tourism in 1992 sparked an era of prosperity that inspired the revitalization of many ancient monasteries and breathed new life into a shrinking monastic population. Meanwhile, ancient artifacts and valuable religious icons started to go missing and appeared in international collections." . @standtallest @climber.abiral @abovethecloudstrav @sadiequarrier #natgeo #travel #stilllife #culture

Throughout the kingdom of Mustang, #Nepal, horses have been long connected with the way of life. As a road begins to carve its way through the once remote region, horses are being replaced by motorcycles. Pictured here, a beauty obscured amidst the aspens while resting between rides in #utah bathed in the light of the sunset. Whether in Nepal or Montana, these creatures evoke an equal sense of awe and fear in me. . #nature #horse #sunset

I commonly get asked what camera system I’m using and what I recommend for beginners. Regardless of whether I’m on #everest or shooting an assignment for @Natgeo, my go-to is the mirrorless @Nikonusa Z system, and I recommend it from the professional to the beginner. It's a camera that anyone can use and can stand the test of time. For example, like this imaged picture here, featured today on the @natgeo feed, I used the Nikon Z6 with the 16-35mm f/4.0 lens. The camera offers a silent shutter mode, so there’s no sound to disrupt the scene unfolding in front of me. Happy to answer any questions you have about my kit while #onassignment or how I got the shot. Ask away! Image specs: Camera: Nikon Z6 Lens 16-35mm f/f.40 Focal Length: 16mm Exposure: 1/160 sec @ f/ 4.0 ISO 800

A behind the scenes look at @mattsegal best off-width techniques to gain entry into a previously unexplored "Sky Cave" in Mustang, Nepal. We rappelled down from the valley walls above to squirm and wiggle into crumbling entrances. Almost 10 years later, I'm back in Mustang, Nepal, but instead, on the kingdom's valley floor. I'm here with @jetbutterflies @abovethecloudstrav @standtallest @climber.abiral to examine how traditional ways of living are adjusting to the pressures of modernity. #onassignment for #natgeo #exploration #discovery #Nepal #travel #culture #climbing #adventure #MattCave

Some have been asking if we are on assignment for #natgeo in Mustang, Nepal to continue examining the sky Caves, a story from almost 10 years ago. This assignment we are shifting from the past to the present. The team and I are documenting how traditional practices and ways of living are adapting to the intrusion of modernity. Buddhism, roads, connectivity, migration, monarchies, climate change and tourism all place new pressures upon these ancient cultures while offering new opportunities. . Just like climbing, projects like these are a team effort. @jetbutterflies @abovethecloudstrav @standtallest @climber.abiral are on the ground with me, and I’m grateful for all the ways they contribute, support and continually sculpt the vision into a reality in an effort to give life to a story that must be seen by the global community. . As many of you who have followed me already know, I have -and will continue to- navigate my challenges with mental health. I have a complicated relationship with social media, and regardless of the bad that comes with this platform, I have experienced the positive that comes with loudly and consistently vocalizing around the topic of Mental Health Awareness. It’s obvious that images of mountains and climbing get the most likes, BUT anytime I post about a personal struggle with mental health, I receive the most comments, private messages and emails. Veterans, stay-at-home parents, athletes, students, women, men..you name the type of person, I can guarantee they have reached out. . I encourage voicing the struggles you may experience if you struggle with Mental Health. You are not in this alone, and it’s not just about “being more happy.” Being vulnerable and vocalizing my challenges was the beginning of finding my individual way through PTSD + Anxiety. It helped me find the right people in my life -the ones that listen, care, empathize and understand. I also encourage anyone and everyone that struggles to find the right professional resources for them. The digital world provides opportunity to find and connect with professionals like never before. . I also encourage those that might not understand what mental health is to google it, read about it, understand it. For a moment, imagine yourself in the skin of another that battles with mental health. Learn to empathize because I guarantee that if you aren’t experiencing it, you are surrounded by people that are. . On this world Mental Health Day, I encourage you to share below your stories, resources and questions. We are already a community here, let’s use it to our advantage. . Adventure can be experienced in many ways. Culturally, adventure is associated with adrenaline and sports that enduce a thrill. Adventure to me, though, is discovery. It is the peeling back of layers to reveal truth...the truth that is inside me or the truth that surrounds all of us. In Mustang, Nepal, almost 10 years ago, I was fortunate enough to expienece the merging of the adventure of sport with the adventure of archeological discovery. Maybe I long to be back here over and over because of the lessons I learned, mostly about myself. Community question: What does "adventure" mean to you? As we travel through Mustang, Nepal, for an assignment with @natgeo, I reminisce over my first published story with the magazine. We explored the ancient "Sky Caves" high above the city. Though the mystery and wonder that permeate photojournalistic discovery surrounded us, it's the people that evokes the most awe in me. The connection of "what was" to "what is".. The understanding that antiquity underlies contemporary.. It's there that fills me with curiosity.. There in the debth of a monk's weathered skin, his piercing eyes and baritone voice.. It's there I feel and experience the present as much as the past. As we start our assignment for #natgeo in Nepal, it's common to come across Mani Stones. Mani stones are plates or rocks inscribed with the 6 syllables Tibetan Buddhist mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum". They can be found everywhere--from the sides of roads and rivers to the walls of temples. Carving these stones can also be a devotional practice, or "sadhana". . There are many translations of this mantra, and @dalailama says "The six syllables..can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure body, speech and mind of the Buddha... All beings naturally have Buddha nature... We have within us the seed of purity, the Buddha-Essence, that can be transformed and fully developed." . Some people have been asking “What is Mustang?” So: Mustang is a former kingdom in north-central Nepal, and is home to one of the world’s great archaeological mysteries. Hidden within the Himalaya on walls deeply cleaved by the Kali Gandaki River are an extraordinary number of human-built caves, also known as the "sky caves." No one knows who dug them. Or why. Or even how people climbed into them. I am en route to here, the kingdom of Mustang, for my latest assignment for #natgeo. Sometimes while I frame and meter for a portrait I run a little video to capture the moment the subject starts to settle into the comfort (or discomfort) of the scene. Here, the rise and fall of this beautiful Loba womans shoulders as she breaths deeply..and the ambient background noise from the field and town.. It all brings me back to my favorite place.. As some of you have said, we can all do our part in showing up mindfully on this planet, but as the world changes around us, businesses, investors, and financiers have an even larger impact. The finance industry has a responsibility to change the ways they manage economic, environmental and social risks. Before I settle into Nepal for an upcoming assignment, I am honored to speak at CIMB Investment Bank’s Cooler Earth Summit in Kuala Lumpur. The summit looks to create action and positive impact while simultaneously showing that businesses can remain relevant and profitable along the way. #Instagram has been a tremendous platform by which to evoke change and conversation around important topics. Beyond the infinite scroll, I, too, have a responsibility to use this “influence” wisely, and am actively engaged directly with brands, political organizations, and financiers as they continue to develop ways to mitigate their impacts. Are there any specific brands or organizations that you wish to see change the way they do business? Reading through the comments from yesterday's post, there's a trend that "optimistic" "outrage" was a frequent answer to my question: what type of communication activates you towards change? In the spirit of these comments, I'd like to share an influential figure on this exact topic. Recently, I watched a panel discussion that included Christiana Figueres (@cfigueres), the Executive Secretary of UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change) who lead the diplomatic collaboration of the Paris Agreement. She frequently uses the concept "outrage + optimisim" in speaking about climate science. If you're looking to be inspired into action, her twitter account is has some great resources and her TED talk is exceptional, as well. Check her out. As a photojournalist, I've had the opportunity to travel to all corners of the earth. Not just mountains, but oceans and ocean communities have been the focus of some of my work with @natgeo. Today the IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) released a special scientific report on the Ocean and Cryosphere (frozen water) and they have mirrored in their study what I have seen first hand. Marine heat waves have doubled in frequency since 1982. By absorbing more CO2, the ocean undergone increasing surface acidification. Most recently, I saw this impact in algea blooms in the Gulf Coast: a sporadic event that has become the norm and effects ocean communities, wild life, local business and quality of life. It's also shown that pessimistic outlook and reporting makes the general public apethetic. In keeping thr conversation moving from yesterday, how do you activate to create change? Which engages you more: outrage with opptimisim or alertist pessimism? We are all wired differently. Which is yours? Pictured here: kayakers enjoying the clear, calm waters of the Andaman Islands. The last post about the climate march ruffled some feathers. As a photojournalist, I have become increasingly aware of how my travel impacts the environment, and I do everything necessary to offset my footprint. This year I took one of my first vacations, in many years, to Mexico, where I experienced a sustainable hospitality model. Tomorrow, I'm on my way back to research, explore, photograph and report on what makes a sustainable hospitality model work. I'll be traveling to the delicate ecosystem that has been ravaged by tourisim: #Tulum, #Mexico. Stay tuned for more stories from the field as I dive deep into what makes hospitality entreprenuers, communities and travelers unite for a common good. In the mean time, I want to know your questions, concerns, thoughts feelings about travel and tourism. Comment below! Pictured here: freediving spear fisherman in Bajo. Tomorrow 9/13/19 new @thelumineers album #III drops. // What can I say?  Im enamored by music.  The way our hearts move our brains to orchestrate sounds creating rhythms, beats, and melodies is nothing shy of miraculous. Music is underwritten by mathematic principles that speak to a greater design, at once shockingly simple and infinitely complex. Music moves us to tears, to love, to act, to create...and penetrates us in ways that other art forms fail to. When the human family became a family of music makers, I don’t exactly know. But for that moment, I’m grateful.  I’m grateful for every moment that brought this new album to life, arguably the most soulful, mature, articulate, and beautiful musical contribution this band has created. Their evolution is staggering. // Images shot BTS with the entire band as they rehearsed to play the opening show of the Mission Ballroom in Denver. They played the entire new album to a sold out crowd that left the ground sticky and covered in footprints. But the day before, the venue was empty and the band rehearsed in front of an empty room allowing the music to linger in the air. Thanks for having me there. I'm humbled and honored. (more images to come) // Link in Bio to download the new album when it drops. Check it out. It’s worth your time. // @thelumineers @jeremiahfraites @wesleyschultz @thebyronisaacs @bootjacobson @stelthuvang

Some recent conversations have brought my memories to float back in time to my first story for #NatGeo. The “Sky Caves of Mustang” are a large collection of 10,000 or more man-made caves dug into the sides of a valley in northern #Nepal. Archeologists and researchers have explored a fraction of these caves and have found mummified human remains dating to at least 2,000-3,000 years old. . As the world becomes smaller, exploration and discovery shifts and changes in meaning as well. Archeologists on our expedition required the support of climbers, like myself and @mattsegal, to access these caves. Just as the printing press changed history, advent of digital dissemination of not just the written word, but visual stories have altered the way we connect, research, explore and communicate. How do you feel discovery, exploration and science has changed through new world of Instagram? . “I feel really accepting of the things I used to be insecure about. I have gone through eating disorders and body shaming, and here I am today doing this shoot for millions of people to see.” ~Katelyn Ohashi (Gymnast; @katelyn_ohashi) . Katelyn, a 2018 NCAA team champion with UCLA, shares a sentiment that resonates with all of us, athletes and non-athletes alike. As an athlete, I work hard to get where I have gone and have to work harder to get where I will go. I’m not naturally muscular, I’m not naturally fat adapted. It takes months and years of endurance and strength training and constant mindful nutrition. I struggle, as everyone does, with how my body doesn’t fit into the box. These images of great athletes are not just a nod to those who are in the spotlight, but also a nod to those that aren’t. The silent crushers that no one has heard of in *all* sports. It’s also a nod to all that struggle daily through insecurity, self-doubt, the mental training to get through that no one sees… We all have it in us to be exceptional, and we all have it in us to find excuses not to show up and do the work. . So, as I board a flight now to speak on a panel for @ESPN, I complete yesterday’s accolades to all the athletes and photographers highlighted in this years issue, and end these series of posts by giving respect to all those out there who try just as hard, who work for it. Who earn it regardless of whether they are seen or not. . ️Katelyn Ohashi (@katelyn_ohashi) by Dana Scruggs (@danascruggs) ️Nancy Lieberman (@nancylieberman) by Ramona Rosales (@ramonarosales) ️Amanda Nunes (@amanda_leoa) by Marcus Smith (@marcus.chi) ️Kelley O’Hara (@kelleyohara) by Heather Hazzan (@heatherhazzan) ️Chris Paul (@cp3) by Gary Land (@garyland) ️Lakey Peterson (@lakeypeterson) by Sarah Lee (@hisarahlee) ️Michael Thomas (@cantguardmike) by Peter Hapak (@peterhapak) ️Christian Yelich (@christianyelich by Joe Pugliese (@joepug

“Normal is boring, and it’s about time we start doing things differently for the outliers.” - Liz Cambage, 2018 WNBA scoring leader . The past few posts of my @espn shoot with @alexhonnold has ruffled some feathers. Though for the most part the feedback has been positive, the commentary has been peppered with sexism, objectification, sexualization and some curmudgeonly “sell-out” commentary from a niche community. . As an athlete myself, I understand first hand how Alex’s fitness is a different type of fitness than mine as an alpinist. We are both climbers, in theory we share same sport from a global perspective, but ultimately our bodies adapt differently. In celebration of those differences - across all sports, all genders, all our struggles to get where we are, all our effort to overcome - I celebrate all the athletes (and photographers) highlighted in @Espn #thebodyissue. Driving to the core sentiment of the Body Issue, my hope is that we can begin to shift our collective perspective of what an athlete looks like. An athlete can be defined on how far they lie outside the norm… .
