Happy New Year to everyone. This pic was taken by my friend Steve Simonsen in the Virgin Islands twenty years ago today. This boat trip was the start of my island life and so many life long friendships on island and off. So many boat trips, so many songs written, so many roads gone down since this pic was taken. When I was in college I played a lot of music with a couple friends of mine, Shawn Lane and Marcus Smith. Every Wednesday night we played a place called the Down Home in Johnson City, TN. Whether it was Green Light On The Southern, which was the first song we ever played, Four Strong Winds, or anything off the Skaggs/ Rice album...  His music was always a staple of our set.  Tony Rice inspired so many, including a kid like me from East Tennessee who was in awe of the way he sang and played Me And My Guitar.  I’ll never forget seeing him sing that at the IBMA bluegrass festival in Owensboro, KY.  It’s printed in my brain forever! Rest In Peace Tony Rice. #ninepoundhammer

I’m proud to launch our Poets & Pirates DJ Sessions on @officialnsr. Music is the most common language of all. When you want to know someone, ask them what they’re listening to. Beyond what they do, what they’re wearing, where they hang out or grew up, the music that connects with them tells you everything. I figured I’d have some of my friends come over and share meaningful songs and stories from their lives. I view No Shoes Nation as the world’s biggest group of friends, and I like to think everyone knows everybody else… at least in spirit. So when we decided to do this I figured, what a great way to get to know some of my best friends a whole lot better. The Mannings have been in my life since I was on Capricorn Records and Peyton was playing for UT. He came onstage when we played Neyland Stadium, sang “Back Where I Come From” with us... and Peyton and Eli just know what all these songs are about. I am devastated at the news of the passing of my friend @eddievanhalen. He was a friend and a hero to anyone who has ever picked up a guitar and had a dream. Eddie and his brother Alex joined us on stage at one of our stadium shows in Los Angeles and it was one of the highlights of my touring life in all my summers on the road. I will never forget that night and how happy we both were that our musical paths crossed that night on stage. Rest In Peace to the best guitar player that ever lived. We will miss you Eddie Van Halen. Your music will live forever!!

Goodbye to my great friend Mac Davis. ⁣ ⁣ I met Mac as a young artist just starting out on my journey, when he was already a legend and a songwriting hero to me. He welcomed me into his home, and turned that tremendous creative light on me. Even though he’d written ‘In The Ghetto’ for Elvis and had so many incredible hits of his own, he made me feel like what I was doing mattered.⁣ ⁣ A small town boy who’d achieved the greatest kinds of fame, he remained a good guy, a family man. That was Mac: a giant heart, quick to laugh and a bigger creative spirit. I was blessed to have it shine on me.⁣ ⁣ And Mac, who was joyous, funny and created a family around him, never stopped writing great songs, creating music and inspiring everyone around him.⁣ ⁣ He loved his wife Lisa and his kids, and all kinds of people. He kept in touch, always a kind word, a new joke or a piece of song he was working on, which made him a blessing to everyone who came into his life.
