Wow this was 6 years ago when we were going back and forth to Standing Rock! I flew to Chicago to read this speech and one of @philsomething for a performance of @peoples_history at the @nationalnurses convention while campaigning as a national surrogate for @berniesanders 🥵 (#reposting from @peoples_history account). This speech perfectly describes my journey in activism to becoming an abolitionist. I couldn’t ever do justice to an MLK speech but as @osopepatrisse pointed out in some of these slides {swipe to see all the slides} Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would be a modern day abolitionist What MLK was communicating here was that we must question the intention of the American systems at its core. He says capitalism aka economic exploitation will thingify them… make them THINGS aka less than human. And that in order to protect the things stolen through exploitation and slavery and genocide, a huge military is required to protect those investments, abroad and here (the investments… not us). What I hear in this speech is that if we investigate the evidence, America’s foundation is selfish and violent at its core core, and it needs to be born again. And many know in the teachings of Jesus, being “born again” through the teachings of Jesus means you have to allow the old version of self with its selfish desires to die and a new selfless foundation will be set at our core, in our heart. To make it plain, in this case: the old version of America should be uprooted because the core was founded in values of white supremacy, violence, colonization and exploitation and to be held accountable - born again as a land and community that centers values of care, nourishment and healing. The new land and systems birthed must allow Black, indigenous, disabled and the most marginalized to center and empower ourselves and our collective wellness - not exploited for our resources, culture and labor. We deserve a land that sees poverty as immoral and illegal instead of criminalizing and exploitable. 4th slide @workingfamilies Also Happy Birthday to another one of my biggest inspirations: the incredible Muhammad Ali 🖤 #MLK #MLKday

Happy Birthday @issarae I’m grateful that you were born, that you exist and that I get the opportunity to troll you... and experience your magical laughter 🖤 Background: 1) I’ve been singing this to Issa since 3rd season when she told me it wasn’t a real song 2) Make up and hair worked their magic to make this beard change with passing time as we were shooting out of order sometimes! Let’s just say the journey to getting it to be amazing was… hilarious. Shout out to a true magician @vondakayemor 🖤🖤🖤

Learning how to fight for myself as hard as I fight for others. Been having a hell of a difficult time on this healing journey but I am committed to it. It’s hard to NOT work especially when our work effects others. But I keep going back to “the movement moves without you”. If you’re like me, we have to remind ourselves that we don’t have to kill ourself to be effective. That is the myth perpetuated by capitalism, colonization and oppressors. It is possible to be optimal and live a long healthy life. Just have to get our ego out the way in thinking things won’t move if we take time to heal. Being well is an essential part of “success”. Been grieving multiple people and dealing with heavy anxiety which can be debilitating… painful af to the point of can’t move, but meditation, breath work and radical community is key. Hasn’t been this bad in years so I’m paying attention. Doing my best to practice abolitionist ways internally - uprooting oppressive systems of thinking and operating, allowing myself to grieve, to mourn, to cry, to take risks, to be, to breathe, allowing myself to dance in public like no one is watching, allowing myself good nourishment, apologizing when I’m wrong, forgiving myself and others and giving grace when people fuck up… building new systems internally that reflect the type of world I want to see. In the words of my comrade @zionestrada “Healing is hard… af.” But I am committed. I fail often, but WHEN I WIN!!! I win BIG because I do my best to ensure that my wins are always connected to our collective liberation. That starts internally.

A lil LAST random BTS photo dump! Yeah I thought yall got rid of me that quickly! Cuz a troll gon’ troll! Nah seriously - As far as the finale, (as many of you have highlighted) Nathan made a decision for his health, and I’m super proud of him for that. He didn’t handle it perfectly, no one did, but in an intense situation, he chose to communicate. That’s huge. I’m also proud of Issa Dee - taking time to be solo and grow and not chase after any man. I love that they have a family and she seems like she’s thriving. I love the Birthday concept and how it ties into the Girls night episode and even the first season. One theme I love most of all in this episode is: community. It rejects the “American” idea of individualism - to shed our community to become successful and then one day maybe donate and “give back”. This shows how we support each other through radical love, intervention, therapy, restoration, healing and rise up together! Honestly I can’t say enough - this show gets us more free. It’s been an honor to embody Nathan’s Htown essence I am forever grateful to be a part of such a phenomenal, culture shifting project. Black people being flawed and beautiful. They could have just aimed for the funny but nah - they dug. Thinking back - 2013 - Trayvon Martin - the year Insecure was brought to HBO, and 2015 when it got green lit. 2015 #OscarsSoWhite that year, same year the Black Lives Matter got picked up by media (RIP Mike Brown #SayHisName). Insecure met the moment supported by the movement and then during the Uprisings, Insecure was in the streets and working behind the scenes to hold our industry accountable. It’s always been a part of the Revolution. It’s an honor be a part of this project that really intended to love on South LA - a Black community I hold dear to my heart. Where I moved straight out of highschool and lived with Mawmaw for 6 years and continue to fight for today - to take care of the community, the way the community took care of me. Inspired and ready to get to work! Thank you for laying a beautiful blueprint for revolutionary art that reaches far beyond what we see on the screen.

LAST EPISODE Y’ALL!! I was gonna save the speech but y’all know I’m long winded so boom, here it is Today is an emotional day for so many reasons… mourning and celebrating the life and work of Desmond Tutu and still processing the anniversary of my Mawmaw passing a few days ago. They both worked hard to make sure we are more free than they were and I know they are proud of the intention and effect this show has had on the lives of Black people - allowing us to be seen and flawed and feel beautiful and resourced, nourished and STRESSED at times and healing in others. Both are Giants in my eyes. So is this show and the ecosystem it has built… the marginalized community it has supported in South LA and for so many other reasons. Make sure you wrap your arms around, protect and care for the leaders that have risen through this show - especially the Black women. Behind the scenes and in front of the scenes. We often forget that follow through. We got work to do to get us free. Let’s do it together. I’m inspired and grateful to have contributed, collaborated and collected checks = really feel SUPPORTED in radical love by and from Black creatives to make some incredible, culture shifting art. Thank y’all for changing my life. 🖤 Issa - I’m a forever fan. 🖤

This is why I do what I do. Introducing… my brand spankin new God son 🖤🖤🖤🖤 cc: @fatmata81 the best mother ever 🖤 I didn’t know my own strength - this is my de facto theme song for all pandemic babies. These lil mfs be STRONG #MerryChristmas - not in hyper capitalist terms but like… the radical socialist example that Jesus Christ (the African one) set to always consider community/the collective, look out for each other, practice radical love and liberation and keep each other well and safe. Leave this world better than we found it. 🖤🖤🖤

We stand taller because of the foundation bell hooks laid for us - honoring the work of those who came before her while working right on par with their contributions to bring us a better future. The influence of your teaching is immeasurable… your reach is unending… the immense amount of people who honor your teaching, parrot you (including myself), promote the values you taught, and just flat out steal from you is a testament to your character, values and dedication to Black Liberation. You simply just ain’t gonna be able to say it more clearly and plainly and truthfully than bell hooks. YOU, Dr. bell hooks, are one of our greatest tools and frameworks for dismantling imperialist, capitalist white supremacist patriarchy. Thank you for your unapologetic radical interpretation of love. Thank you for showing us how to always consider the collective. "The moment we choose to love we begin to move against domination, against oppression. The moment we choose to love we begin to move towards freedom, to act in ways that liberate ourselves and others." Thank you, Dr. bell hooks. For giving us the framework. For teaching us to fight, love, and educate ourselves. For challenging me to uproot my own oppressive conditioning. For making us better and leaving this world and us better than you found it. 🖤 Live on in true power #bellhooks

“I’m obnoxious.” (name that movie) Alsooooo… #MELANIN #POPPIN Wanted to come back and say one thing I forgot to say I loved about last nights episode. We rarely get to see Black people envision their futures in such a beautiful way. I love that her future fantasy of Inglewood was a healthy, Black, thriving community with Black leadership and healthy businesses. Another was the opposite of ep 7 where it was all about fucked up communication. In episode 8, seem like folks are learning from their mistakes - Healthy communication with Molly between her and Taurean. Super intentional convos with her and the fam, even bringing in a friend to help with an intervention of sorts. Molly and Issa healthy communication. And of course Issa and Nathan. And always… highlighting a normalcy and nuance in the mental health journey. So grateful to be a part of this beautiful final season. 2 episodes left! #insecureHBO

I’m very proud of myself for syncing this mf music cuz I can do ALL things… Amen? How y’all feel about tonight’s episode? Let's unpack. One powerful theme, obviously (or maybe not) was about making choices. That, at the end of the day, it’s not about a "perfect” or “the right” way forward - it's about making a choice with integrity, having the best intentions of leaving this world better than we found it and moving forward with collective wellness in mind (our combined community wellness). That’s my own spin on it . Positive and negative and all the grey areas were in EVERY one of her “future fantasies”. We just have to be willing and grounded to deal with the cause and effect of our actions, the reaction to your action. That’s accountability. Shout out to #KevinBray for killing it (as always) directing this episode and @eliwilsonpelton for writing such a beautifully layered episode 🖤🖤. 2 more to go!

I’ve been dressed in the brand Fear of God a few times lately and it’s kinda special/surreal/nostalgic when people bring as an option because @jerrylorenzo was the first wardrobe stylist I met on my first job in LA when I was 19 I think! And now he’s got his own dope ass label and I get the privilege of wearing it every once in a while. Style: @dexrob with the Full look: @jacquemus Shoe: @fearofgod

Hello mf 🤷‍♂️ once again… Cover of LA Times Magazine (full story link in stories). Print version is available TODAY limited online - link in @latimesimage bio! If you wana pick it up in person TOMORROW you can go pick it up at @issarae’s @findyourhilltop any of the locations. Thank you Julissa James for weaving our vulnerable and powerful, spiritual conversation into a beautiful love letter to my younger self when I had graduated and moved to LA straight out of high school. So much alignment. And so many people we talked about Richard Lyons and Dustin Felder, Troy Rowland, Mawmaw, Marilyn Beaubien, @julissa_prado and all the Black people who wrapped their arms around me when I first got to LA and the shelter I used to volunteer at.. Obviously couldn’t fit everyone and everything but… Long story short - we keep us safe. Hopefully people read this and get encouraged. The intent of white supremacy is to keep us turned against each other and make us lose hope so we don’t continue to organize, coalition build and win. When we do fight, together, we do win. 🖤 Thank you @latimesimage and @erikatucker awesome surprise Writer: Julissa James Outlet: @latimesimage Photos: @junebugkim Styling: @haylee_ahumada Special thank you and shout out to: @jazzimcg & @reparations.club for letting us use their incredible BLACK WOMAN OWNED RADICAL space and letting me buy everything I could get my hands on 🖤 Make sure y’all follow and support them! I am… a revolutionary. 🖤 Rest in power Fred Hampton. #repost @bldpwr “In the predawn hours of December 4, 1969, Fourteen plainclothes cops, packing pistols, a shotgun, and a machine gun, pulled up to the apartment of leaders of the Chicago Black Panther Party. At 4:30 a.m., the police kicked down the door, firing more than 90 times. The bullet storm critically wounded two and killed Mark Clark and Fred Hampton. Recently unearthed documents show that the FBI, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Chicago police conspired to assassinate Fred Hampton. The raid was a Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) operation designed to infiltrate, discredit, and disrupt domestic political organizations. 52 years later, we grieve the loss of Fred Hampton and all those murdered at the hands of the police and state-sanctioned violence. We honor their spirits and the teachings they left behind.”

Yalllllll 506 was triggering af! Let’s talk about it. I felt like from Crenshawn and issa to Molly and Taurean and Issa and Nathan - hiding what you’re going through is EXHAUSTING. But we also see every person and space is not safe to reveal those parts of yourself as you see with the way Suge threw the super sensitive experience of navigating the bipolar struggle in Nathan’s face. Look at the way Crenshawn rejected Issa’s olive branch or how much Taurean could relate to Molly’s situation when she was finally straight up about it. We can’t predict how people are gonna react but we also have to keep in mind that we don’t know what Suge is goin through… or Crenshawn Another sub-theme (for me) is just dealing with the consequences of your actions no matter how well intentioned it may be. We need to practice accountability that doesn’t mimic carceral and policing punishment and violent responses in our interpersonal relationships (canceling each other, putting people in metaphorical prisons, abuse or policing each other’s emotions are examples) We really never know what’s going on in anyone else’s life and it’s so important to breathe, and be quick to listen and slow to speak, intentional with empathy in dealing with each other. Have compassion in understanding other’s struggles. Let’s work together to build new healthier systems of communication, nourishment and support for each other cuz what we have is too often trash. ALSO both Nathan and Issa are dealing with consequences of well intended actions that ain’t go so well. Gotta breathe thru healing consequences… it just is what it is. So many times we think getting past immediate conflict is the end. Nah accountability & growth - it’s a process… There are a lot of layers in mental health issues and I'm grateful to be able to honor Nathan’s essence flaws and all @insecurehbo. The critique and the conversations are necessary - let’s make sure our words are generative and imagine how we would want our most beloved loved ones to be handled with grace and love. #LiberateMentalHealth @bldpwr #InsecureHBO Shout out to the brilliant producers, writers and set decoration crew for the details 🖤

#repost @richiereseda “Swipe for the fine print. 1. First of all Organizing works. Shoutout to the brilliant and relentless organizing of Julius’ family, the @justiceforjulius campaign, and all of us. We saved this man’s life in the short run, giving us a fighting chance to keep going. 2. Let’s be clear that Governor Stitt resentenced Julius from one death sentence to another. Life without the possibility of parole is death by incarceration. He also barred Julius from ever seeking another pardon from this death sentence, an attempt to make sure he dies in prison. 3. This struggle continues. We will not stop until Julius, and all our family caught in this justiceless system are free. Continue to follow @justiceforjulius for next steps.
