THINKING OF OUR service men and women (and their families) who will be hundreds, if not thousands of miles away from their loved ones this holiday season. It can be terribly lonesome, the very worst kind of homesickness and yet, they go wherever/whenever called time and time again. Despite the disappointing news they’ll inevitably have to deliver to their loved ones, despite the heartache that will ensue they march on and instead turn to one another to form a different kind of family. One that is forged out of sacrifice and humility, of a shared understanding that what they do despite its inherent risks is for the greater good and (that) in and of itself runs deeper in them than that of blood. These are the boots I actually wore back in 2003 during my time in Iraq. I keep them just as they were, covered in sand, oil, blood and dirt - a strong visceral reminder of how f**king lucky I’ve been since that time. They are a slightly different size yet the same kind/brand that were filled with the feet of some of America’s greatest patriots. They too strapped them on, faced the uncertain, kissed their families goodbye and it is because of that common denominator that some of us find ourselves feeling, well a bit out of place during the holidays. It’s why I can’t help but feel that we MUST do better to honor, respect and support those who strap on their own boots, time and time again. If I could I would visit every base, every FOB, hospital room, empty dinner table seat, every sporting event, recital, first dance, graduation, birth, death, I would stand at the doorway because that’s where the families keep hoping their loved one will walk in from and I would simply say thank you, THANK YOU for all that you do FOR US. Today marks the 6th anniversary of the untimely deaths of Detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. Today we reaffirm, we cement our commitment to ensuring that their names, their legacies and their sacrifices never be forgotten. @Det_Ramosfndn @katielusso

Today in a moving tribute, we remembered two great men, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu who nearly 6 years ago were taken from their families, their friends and from the City they died protecting, simply for the uniform they wore. We made a promise to never forget. Tomorrow in a simple but meaningful way we set out to do just that with our Memorial Toy Drive. May the names live forever and ever and their souls rest forever in heavenly peace.

More than 4 elementary schools will be receiving gifts tomorrow at PS 54 from the @det_ramosfndn. This amazing feat is truly only possible because of YOU. I am so humbled by your generous outpouring of love, encouragement and monetary donations. It once again proves that together we can do great things.
