When I was a school kid, faded Kodachrome photos in textbooks of the Hoover Dam were held up to us as a grand example of progress, renewable energy, US can-do ingenuity, and a national mobilization during the darkest days of the Great Depression. How will we respond now to climate change and our time’s greatest challenges? What will a renewable energy future look like and how grand of a global mobilization will it take get there? We’re on Day 8 of a @natgeo renewable energy road trip across the USA. #roadtripto2070.

Electric car, but I’m still feeling those road trip feelings. Same songs, sunsets, desert drives, and wide open highways. Day 7 of a @natgeo renewable energy road trip across the USA. #roadtripto2070

It’s sunny in Badwater Basin at the below sea level bottom of Death Valley, California (107 F / 42.8 C). Twenty years ago I drove across Death Valley in a rented, gas guzzling convertible. (I placed my Leica in the backseat where the sun, magnified through the 50mm lens, burned holes in the cloth shutter setting fire to the inside of the camera). Today I’m backtracking through this area in a borrowed electric car on Day 7 of a @natgeo renewable energy road trip across the USA. #roadtripto2070

Clothing store mannequins face a gas station at a Mojave, California highway intersection. Gas is always easy to find on a classic USA road trip, but we’re not looking for gas as we cross the USA in our electric vehicles. Traveling from one charging station to the next is a new, sometimes more complicated, always greener journey. Day 3 of our renewable energy road trip #roadtripto2070 for @natgeo w/ @craigwelch

A mural of the great Julius Erving. North Philadelphia. The painting is part of the city’s Mural Arts Program @muralarts and African American Iconic Images Collection. It was created in 1990 by artist Kent Twitchell, who lobbied to paint Dr. J in a business suit instead of a basketball uniform to portray him more as a man and role model than 76ers star. I was in elementary school, and a true fan of Julius Erving during the years he became a champion and forever changed the game. As a kid, the most coveted object I remember was my friend Brian’s life-sized 6’7” dunking Dr. J bedroom door poster. But this amazing mural just fits under the 3 story building’s peak.

U.S. Marines, from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, return fire on Taliban positions near the town of Garmser in Helmand Province of Afghanistan in May, 2008. I worked for twenty years as a news photographer covering conflict and the consequences in Africa, Asia and the Middle East including more than a decade in Afghanistan following the attacks on Sept. 11. This weekend I’ll be joining fellow conflict photographers / lifelong friends to discuss our work, its impact, and our profession’s personal toll. Shooting War Symposium | Saturday, June 22, 2019. TIFF Lightbox, 350 King St West, Toronto. 9:00am - 6:30pm. (David Guttenfelder @apnews)

@Viennadog is perched in the lobby of St. Paul’s Fitzgerald Theater while waiting for its owner/ the venue’s lighting director after a show. Vienna (a rescue dog who dresses in a jean jacket) is one of many reliably memorable things about the 109-year-old Fitzgerald Theater. @thefitzgeraldtheater, Thank you for the great shows, the communities you bring together, and for long-hosting Nat Geo Live events. On stage last night was fellow photographer and friend @amivitale.

Today, the world begins a solemn commemoration of the Rwandan Genocide and the lives of 800,000 ethnic Tutsi and moderate Hutus, slaughtered 25 years ago. In 1994 I made this picture of a Rwandan man, reaching under a door in a psychiatric hospital and trying to free himself from solitary confinement where he’d been locked by fellow patients after allegedly stealing from the facility’s limited supply of food. During the killing and chaos of the 100 days of genocide, hospital staff were gone and patients, both ethnic Tutsi and Hutu, were left to care for themselves. Ironically, the hospital was one of the few places remaining where Hutu and Tutsi continued to live side by side. In April 1994, I was working for a community newspaper in small town USA (Iowa) and watched the news of Rwandan killings with horror. Millions more refugees were streaming over the border into neighboring DRC and Tanzania, where 2 years before I had been a foreign exchange student of Swahili. Hoping to contribute something, Cassy and I quit our jobs, packed our bags and moved to Eastern Africa, where I stayed on the continent for the rest of my 20s. It was an overwhelming, humbling start of my work and purpose that continues 25 years on. I join in mourning for Rwanda today, though it is very painful to remember what was committed there and what I witnessed. But I also can’t forget the most spirited, toughest, most resilient, people I’ve ever met in my life.

A portrait of David Huckfelt, whose beautiful debut solo record, Stranger Angels, was released today. Link in my bio. @david_huckfelt wrote the songs for Stranger Angels while living alone in a remote cabin on Lake Superior’s Isle Royale during an artist-in-residence stay for the National Park Service. This portrait I made of David was superimposed with a photograph he shot through his island cabin window. Inspired by the book Signs Of Your Identity, David asked @dzalcman, who uses multiple exposure photographs in her documentary work, to use our pictures and to build the final image for his new record. David is a founding member of the transcendental folk band The Pines @the_pines. Like me, he’s based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has small town Iowa roots. Please have a listen to Stranger Angels and see David live the next time his tour comes to your city.

#NatGeo100Contest. @Natgeo has hit 100 million followers! To mark this moment, they’re having a photo contest for the next 24 hours. To submit, simply post your most Nat Geo-inspired photo on your own feed using the hashtag #NatGeo100Contest. The top 10 photos will be posted on @natgeo and the winner gets a photo trip to Tanzania. Good luck! For me, I’ll mark this milestone by sharing the most “liked” picture I’ve posted to the @natgeo account. Surprisingly, it’s not a picture I made in North Korea, Afghanistan, or another far-flung place I’ve been blessed to travel to and photograph for National Geographic. Instead it’s a quiet scene, photographed with my phone, in the backyard of my big sister’s family farm in rural Iowa.
