During the Taliban era, someone recognized him and told him they would help him emigrate to a country in northern Europe, but he turned down the offer because he didn't want to leave his mother and sisters behind. He works hard to support his eight family members and is a proud man who is grateful for our efforts to locate him and help him and his family.

Against all odds, I was able to locate R.M. last year in Kabul. I first photographed him as a boy soldier during the civil wars in Afghanistan more than twenty years ago.

During the conflict among warring national factions in Afghanistan that followed the retreat of the occupying Soviet military, city neighborhoods barricaded themselves against each other. There was no law and little order. This 14-year-old was charged with maintaining a barrier along one of the main streets of Kabul. It was great to meet him last year in Kabul. He is doing well, and enjoyed reminiscing about the day our paths crossed.

I photographed this young Rinpoche ('precious one') at the Sakya Monastery in Bylakuppe, Karnataka, India. For many families, having their son accepted into such a monastery is a great honor.

Goggles and a scarf barely shield this worker from the choking dust and smoke of this ship breaking yard in Mumbai, India. He stared directly into my camera for a few seconds before resuming his dangerous work.

I photographed these men near Angkor Wat, Cambodia, a few years after the end of the genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge, which killed almost 1.7 million people. These men were part of a wedding party and were waiting their turn to be photographed. The man on the right was a survivor of Cambodia's "Killing Fields".

Make-believe conquers the tools of war as children clamber over an abandoned anti-aircraft gun in Beirut, Lebanon, 1982. These tools of war became an improvised playground demonstrating the resilience of children. No matter how dire the situation, how dangerous the environment, children need to play. Whether it is splashing in puddles or climbing on abandoned tanks, their world of make believe is almost as important as food and shelter.

One of my favorite places in Rome is the movie studio Cinecitta. There is an entire workshop dedicated to replicating Roman statues and figures from antiquity. Many great films like the Bicycle Thief, Ben Hur, Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York, and numerous films by Federico Fellini were made at this studio.

I visited Cape Town, South Africa in 1996, two years after Nelson Mandela was elected President. Seeing two little girls, one black and the other white, on a school trip to a vineyard brought home the reality of the sea changes that were sweeping the country. During subsequent visits, it was obvious that the legacy of apartheid still inhabited every corner of South Africa. It is 'a country of two nations', yet no one could have predicted the progress that started with the twin concepts of truth and reconciliation--now it is possible to believe that South Africa could serve as a model for other nations which struggle to recover from wounded histories.
