For the final episode of this series, I will refer to many of the concepts learned so far, to work on a new skill: the super-forecasting. By using base rates and being mindful of common heuristics and fallacies, we can become better at forecasting future events, expressed in probability or degree of credence. This takes away vagueness and overconfidence in our predictions. Thank you to everyone who got to the end of this whole series! Let me know your thoughts and suggestions for more content below!

In this episode, I explain the concept of "base rate," or prior probability, which is very useful in making predicitons but often ignored by our intuition. Our intuition generally prefers situational evidence over base rates. Stereotypes are a form of base rates that our intuition actually uses, sometimes correctly, often incorrectly. This is the 9th episode of this (late night) series, in which I explore how our mind works, how we make judgments and predictions, how we are prone to errors and biases, and then how to moderate these with a few concepts of statistics. Over 10 episodes, the idea is to become more self-critical and value the pursuit of truth over "being right."

In this episode, I talk about the effect of "regression to the mean" or how extreme events are usually followed by less extreme ones. Even if this is only a statistical effect, often in life, we attribute a causal explanation to this effect, which makes us see things that are not there. This is the 8th episode of this (late night) series, in which I explore how our mind works, how we make judgments and predictions, how we are prone to errors and biases, and then how to moderate these with a few concepts of statistics. Over 10 episodes, the idea is to become more self-critical and value the pursuit of truth over "being right."

In this episode, I talk about the importance of sample size in statistics, and how small samples can yield extreme results and lead to erroneous interpretations of data and, as a consequence, incorrect opinions and wrong courses of action taken. This is the 7th episode of this (late night) series, in which I explore how our mind works, how we make judgments and predictions, how we are prone to errors and biases, and then how to moderate these with a few concepts of statistics. Over 10 episodes, the idea is to become more self-critical and value the pursuit of truth over "being right.

In this episode, I explain the difference between correlation and causation, and how often the two are conflated by our intuition, leading to some seriously incorrect inferences about our observations. This is the 6th episode of this (late night) series, in which I explore how our mind works, how we make judgments and predictions, how we are prone to errors and biases, and then how to moderate these with a few concepts of statistics. Over 10 episodes, the idea is to become more self-critical and value the pursuit of truth over "being right.

In this episode, I explain the concept of hindsight bias, or how we tend to think we "knew it all along" and also how we see causes and intentions even when there aren't any. This is the 5th episode of this (late night) series, in which I explore how our mind works, how we make judgments and predictions, how we are prone to errors and biases, and then how to moderate these with a few concepts of statistics. Over 10 episodes, the idea is to become more self-critical and value the pursuit of truth over "being right.

In this episode, I explore how we become over-confident in our knowledge, how we like simple stories and how to be less reactive to new information, and more thorough and self-critical in our opinions. This is the 4th episode of this (late night) series, in which I explore how our mind works, how we make judgments and predictions, how we are prone to errors and biases, and then how to moderate these with a few concepts of statistics. Over 10 episodes, the idea is to become more self-critical and value the pursuit of truth over "being right."

Over 10 episodes, the idea is to become more self-critical and value the pursuit of truth over "being right." I this episode, I explore the affect heuristic, which is a subconscious cognitive shortcut by which how we "feel" about something influences what we "think" about it. When shaping public opinion on a complicated matter, it can be a driver of irrational political polarisation, so being aware of it is an excellent step towards a balanced and self-critical opinion.

In this (late night) series, I explore how our mind works, how we make judgments and predictions, how we are prone to errors and biases, and then how to moderate these with a few concepts of statistics. Over ten episodes, the idea is to become more self-critical and value the pursuit of truth over "being right." In this second episode, I talk about the availability heuristic and how the news and movies we watch can skew our perception of reality and determine our fears (often irrationally).

Over 10 episodes, the idea is to become more self-critical and value the pursuit of truth over "being right." In this first episode, I begin by differentiating between intuitive and rational thinking. I then present the first heuristic: thinking by representativeness and how it can lead us to commit logical fallacies.

I love music. Every stage of my life had different genres and different ways of listening to music. In the 90’s it was an old Sony Walkman playing rock tapes. Today we can stream literally anything anywhere with Hi-Fi quality. The last decade has opened the doors for endless A.I. driven music exploration and, oh boy, am I grateful for that! From a rock and metal enthusiast (on my guitar I still play metal riffs), I slowly transitioned to a passion for electronic music, beginning with an interest in minimal Techno from the mid 90’s. Electronic music has virtually no limitations to the sounds employed, and talented musicians can stimulate the brain in unexpected ways. So today I want to share a playlist I have put together called “1 trip”. It is a mixture of genres, mainly sub-genres of techno and house, all under the umbrella of electronic. It is good for “tripping” in the literal sense of travelling or late-night driving, or in the more figurative definition of what I would define as a “meditative state” or “deep focus”. Play it in shuffle, and enjoy! (Link in bio). Headphones: @marshallheadphones Monitor II Artwork: Rene Magritte, “La Flèche de Zenon”, 1964.

In August 2019, while travelling back to London on my motorbike, I crossed the Alps from Italy to France via the Swiss passes of Gotthard, Furka and Grimsel. It took me about half day from Lake Maggiore in Italy to Dijion in France. I wore a GoPro on my helmet. On YouTube there is an extended 16 min version so that you can feel like you came along the journey! Watching this on a big screen makes me feel like I'm there again. LINK IN BIO.
