In order to grow beyond who you are today you must allow yourself to unravel, unfold and unveil all the LOVE within. I am so thankful to my children for helping me grow from within. For every single life affirming experience they have given me, I am thankful. Watching them grow and blossom next to me is a gift I will carry through my whole life.

Everyone will try to tell you what’s best for your baby.  But one thing to remember is that the most important thing you can give your baby- the most nurturing, the most educational, and the one he’ll never grow tired of - is your LOVE.  This love manifests through your touch, words and songs, play and most of all your loving presence.  You can give your baby the best thing in the world for free, your devotion. And by giving your baby your complete attention, be it once a day or as often as you think of it, you also give yourself the benefits of living in the moment, of seeing the world with the wonder of your baby’s new eyes.  So grab your tiny tot, toss aside your parenting books while you tumble on the floor with your baby. And know this: “you are the most important gift that you can give to your child.” #parenting @thetot

Sometimes I wish that just like a kangaroo, I had a pocket in my belly to keep my babies in. Snuggled up and close to my heart at all times. It would also really help with keeping my middle wild child in check!

Six Weeks or Life with this blessing of mine. I have dreamed of having a baby girl and it still blows my mind that now I do! ( honestly I forget she’s a girl and just instinctively call her a “he”, after 2 boys) I hope I can raise her to be strong yet kind, loving and caring, genuine and true to her values and her beliefs. I hope the world she grows up in will be better, kinder, and more fair. Happy 40 days my Love.

I am almost done with my 4 th trimester and what a journey it has been. I committed for the first time to take the time and honor my body by respecting It, and showing it love and care. After 10 long months of gestation, where our bodies are focused on the baby and we as mothers are left to our own devices, it is so important to spend the last several weeks supporting our recovery. The point was to prove to myself that MY body is capable of miracles if I support it the right way. I committed to an Ayurvedic method during my journey which began with the right food, Ayurvedic treatments, the right homeopathy, proper rest and bonding with my baby. As a result, my body healed so much faster, my mind and spirit were so much calmer, my hormones were the most balanced they have ever been in postpartum, and I feel strong and healthy. I shared photos weekly to show that if we take the time, if we do not rush, if we understand and approach this time in postpartum as seriously as we do pregnancy our bodies are capable of working miracles and we can look and feel incredible.

I leaned about the 4th trimester only with my 3rd pregnancy thanks to a friend who recommended the “Fourth Trimester” book to me. It’s astounding that in the US so little information exists about this period of time for a mother. The only resources available for postpartum period are to do with newborns adjusting to the real world or mental health for mothers. What about what happens to our bodies during this period and how to handle the changes not only emotional but also physical as we try to adjust and thrive in our new role. The fourth trimester/ postpartum period is a particularly vulnerable time for new mothers and can feel like falling off of a cliff. The support and attention that we get during pregnancy all of a sudden disappears after a baby is born. We are expected to just bounce back and jump right into it immediately after the baby is born. But it is during these early postpartum months that new mothers especially need emotional and physical support. In the US post-partum depression and anxiety is so commonly spread, yet is so extremely taboo that noone wants to talk about it openly or ever seek professional help. We feel the guilt the burden of something being wrong with us, we feel it’s our fault and we refuse to discuss it. As a result these conditions go untreated and result in suffering for moms, milk supply drying out, mood disorders and all kinds of nasty consequences. But why does our society and more importantly we put such pressure on ourselves to “bounce back”. Why do we celebrate going back to our normal pre pregnancy selfs instead of taking our time, respecting our body, truly healing inside and out? The term "bounce back" just really needs to go. This stupid assumption that the moment we have a baby, everything returns to normal—our waistline, our life, our kitchen counters, our mental health. And when it inevitably doesn't, we blame ourselves and feel like failures. 4th trimester is a time to ask for help and support from family, friends, colleagues. We need to re-conceptualize, re-educate ourselves that the support and help during 4th trimester is equally as important to the health of the baby and mother as the previous three.

The laminated sign pinned to our hospital room’s wall was bold, and clear- cut leaving no room for interpretation. Bed sharing is not safe. Newborn babies are safest sleeping in a clear plastic container provided. My husband and I smiled knowingly, grateful we’d already educated ourselves on infant sleep. We felt empowered we’d made our own informed decision, based on scientific research and millions of years of evolutionary history, rather than the influence of modern day fear and consumerism. I felt confident to share our bed with our baby and the benefits it promised excited me. But, only hours after our sons birth I thought I should respect hospital policy. So I nursed our baby, placed him in the hard plastic container and watched him fall asleep. I listened to his breathing, hopping up every two minutes to double check he was ok. The problem was, I couldn’t sleep. My little man who I’d nourished and protected for over 40 weeks inside of me, was now in a plastic container. It felt wrong. Every fiber of my being was instinctively screaming to hold him. I couldn’t stand it any longer. So I scooped up my son and felt him nuzzle into me. I relaxed and drifted off to sleep and our son hasn’t left our bed yet. So is bed sharing dangerous? Well, that all depends. Eating can be a dangerous habit, but do we stop eating out of fear of choking? Of course not, we learn hot to eat safely. And we need to be teaching new parents how to bed share safely rather than making statements that it’s categorically unsafe. In 1999 consumer product safety commission published data showing over 3 times as many crib- related infant fatalities compared with adult bed accidents. If practiced intentionally by informed breastfeeding parents, bed sharing is undeniably safer for babies than isolated crib sleeping. Via: @raisedgood ( I relate to this so much had to share)

I breast-feed because I am lucky, have choices, and am physically able to. I have a supportive husband, an incredible mother who watches her granddaughter three days a week for free, and a workplace that allows me to exercise all of my breast-feeding rights as laid out by the Affordable Care Act. (For the record, mothers, you are entitled to these things: reasonable break time to express breast milk for one year after your child's birth each time you experience the need to express milk, and a place to pump, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public.) But many women literally cannot afford to work and send their children to day care, as they can't get a job that pays enough to justify the cost. And some mothers meet with resistance when they exert their Affordable Care Act–supported rights. We can't expect the value of breast-feeding to just trickle down to mothers in the trenches, pumping away in cramped offices and broom closets, working multiple jobs, forking over significant portions of income to day care, and, yes, tired and close to the breaking point, cursing their own desire to continue feeding their children their milk. We have to make an effort to reach all mothers, not just those actively seeking support and information. There's much more at stake than infant health. Breast-feeding is one of the key public-health interventions that we can actually do. Because we know that a lot of our metabolism, neurobiology, and immune function are shaped in huge ways by it—and that these have lifelong influences on how our bodies function. We know that breast-feeding can help children avoid diseases that manifest later in life, like type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. Right now, we lack the societal, institutional, and cultural support structure to help mothers meet their breast-feeding goals. Seemingly everything about breast-feeding, which for the first few months easily takes up eight hours a day, is at odds with holding down full-time work. Did you know that to produce breast milk, mothers melt their own body fat. We literally dissolve parts of ourselves, starting with gluteal-femoral fat, aka our butts, and turn it into liquid to feed our babies. Breast milk is much more than food: It's potent medicine and, simultaneously, a powerful medium of communication between mothers and their babies one that female bodies have been developing for 300 million years. When a baby suckles at its mother's breast, a vacuum is created. Within that vacuum, the infant's saliva is sucked back into the mother's nipple, where receptors in her mammary gland read its signals. This "baby spit backwash," contains information about the baby's immune status. Everything scientists know about physiology indicates that baby spit backwash is one of the ways that breast milk adjusts its immunological composition. If the mammary gland receptors detect the presence of pathogens, they compel the mother's body to produce antibodies to fight it, and those antibodies travel through breast milk back into the baby's body, where they target the infection. At the same time that it is medicine, breast milk is a private conversation between mother and child. While babies lacks words, breast-feeding makes it possible for them to tell us exactly what they need. The messages we are sending each other are literally made of ourselves, and they tell us about what is going on in our lives at that very moment. Breast milk also points to a future of exciting possibilities. Recently, researchers discovered that pluripotent stem cells, stem cells that have the ability to form any of the more than 200 different types of cells found in adult human bodies, are present in breast milk. The only other place these cells have been found is embryonic tissue. This means breast milk could become a source of stem cells which has huge potential for regenerative medicine. By @angelagarbes

Left the baby for 45 mins for a little “date” with my oldest. He is getting so inquisitive and so interesting to be around. I love our alone time when I get to whiteness him take in the outside world with his open heart and mind. He describes everything in such a thoughtful way I could spend hours listening to him talk. Children have their own way of explaining things or questioning a lot that we take for granted in life. I love that he opens up my mind and makes me see the world in different colors. @thetot
