Yooo! #TheFlash aka Barry is on TRIAL right now headed to jail, and many of us are upset at the injustice going on with his trial the show! It’s messed up right?! And a good story line! But do you realize that this is happening in real life?? (SWIPE LEFT) There are hardworking, super communities, of people who are the backbone of our country, who work HARD for low pay, Black and Brown people who are being targeted by our criminal justice / immigration systems. Detained without bail, no crime committed, productive, hardworking mothers, fathers, children, disabled children, students, targeted every day but EVEN MORE right now! Latin & Muslim and black immigrants being deliberately targeted by ICE and this administration. Dreamers and TPS holders are being TARGETED for injustice. The Dream Act was created to give these young immigrants the chance to participate in the American dream, go to school, and work, pay taxes without fear of deportation. That’s all. Now they are being treated like a negotiating tool for the wall and other heinous policies. And slowly losing their protection, one by one. We want a CLEAN DREAM ACT and we want it NOW. Help protect them! Demand a clean dream act. Demand that they not be used as a negotiating tool for other heinous policies. #NoDreamNoDeal If you care, make some noise about it on your social media, call your senators #NoDreamNoDeal https://fightforourdream.org/ link in IG story #Repost @aclu_nationwide ・・・ 16,287 young people have lost DACA protections since September 5th. We can’t stop calling Congress and demanding a clean Dream Act until all Dreamers are safe from deportation.

My favorite quote: “First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.” Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.” - MLK ***My caption from last year —> {And here in 2017, I'd like to extend this not just to white moderates but to ALL moderates & people who prefer a negative peace (the absence of tension) to a positive peace (the presence of justice). Especially those who call themselves liberal, progressive or democratic...#bechange #blacklivesmatter #heretostay #illwalkwithyou #noDAPL #lovewins #stopsessions #MLKday } This year: now let’s get up off of our asses and turn these “thank you MLK’s” into some action. We’ve got, DACA, TPS, Black women, men, latinx, trans, disabled, Muslim, Native communities being targeted... let’s get to it.

When Oprah mentioned Recy Taylor’s name, I literally jumped! When Recy Taylor died I started to dedicate a post to her and how ashamed I was that I didn’t know her story. It’s just another example of us ignoring women of color! I didn’t post it because the day I was making the post, Erica Garner died. I’m glad Recy’s story FINALLY got the platform it deserved and from the mouth of a beautiful, successful, brilliant brown skinned black woman who has also endured immense hardship. But this is just the beginning. Recy didn’t ever receive justice in her life on Earth but she helped millions of women. Let’s honor her legacy, speaking up for those women who’s voices are ignored. Oprah’s speech and acceptance of that Cecil B Demille award was not a victory (remember she’s the FIRST black woman), it was an admonition, a call to action & a warning to those who stand in the way of the revolution that is happening. Times Up. Don’t be one of those people (that includes those who remain silent and inactive). Let’s speak up, LOUD, for those who are most often ignored: women of color (latin, black, Muslim), trans women, many young men who are trafficked, AND as Jessica Jackson of @cut50 pointed out to me, women in prison. They are forgotten in this #metoo , Times Up movement and their voices need to be heard! They endure the worst type of sexual abuse and are completely ignored as if they don’t exist. More actions to come. Stay tuned. Rest in power Recy Taylor. And thank you Oprah. 🖤

Haven’t done this in a while... (trying to figure a way to reframe my #thotforacause hashtag after advice from a friend) BUT for NOW... this is my FRIDAY #THOTforacause post, SWIPE LEFT @tulsigabbard: Attorney General Sessions () just put every state with policies of legalized medical and recreational marijuana on high alert, escalating the failed, so-called "War on Drugs." This means that millions more people in Hawai‘i and across the country will be at risk of arrest and federal prosecution - for possessing, using, or selling marijuana - even though it is legal and in accordance with the statutes of their state. It is time for Congress to seriously consider H.R. 1227, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act. This common-sense reform will give some relief to the millions of people and families who have been dragged into our broken criminal justice system and prevent lives from needless ruin in the future. Please add your name as a citizen cosponsor of the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act. (Link in IG story) #blacklivesmatter #heretostay #marijuana (Note: this is how they continue to systemically oppress communities of color: legalize marijuana and allow certain people to get rich off of it while continuing to jail people (disproportionately people of color) and/or failing to pardon ppl for marijuana related charges/convictions and/or allowing them to participate in the newfound profit)

#RIP Erica Garner, woman, mother, daughter, aunt, sister, activist, justice seeker, good human - No matter how tired she was, spiritually, mentally and physically, she continued to pursue justice for her father Eric Garner, who was ALSO taken from this world too early by the #NYPD. Yes, I believe she was taken, too. She received no justice from this criminal “justice” system for her father, but she continued to fight for justice for all of us. I had the HONOR of hosting/participating in a few events with her for the Bernie campaign. She always said she was nervous and then got out there and blew everyone away. It wasn’t ever about fearlessness, it’s overcoming a great amount of fear for the greater good that is so impressive. Beautiful human, beautiful soul. THIS is what police brutality does to families, it doesn’t just take the loved ones that are shot, that bullet penetrates the entire family. Too many black and brown women are left with the stress of rebuilding and seeking justice ON TOP OF taking care of children and working, etc. Even while she was in the hospital, there were problems with the family and NYPD. Glad you can rest now, Erica. We will continue your fight. Please keep an eye out on my IG timeline and twitter for a link to raise money for her children. #blacklivesmatter #icantbreathe #EricGarner #EricaGarner #RestinPower

Still here in #Mexico ...Keeping my eye on the #Nochixtlán case and the activism behind it while I’m here in #Oaxaca. Respect to those activists involved. and #RIP to those who died. I don’t fully understand because of similar problems that we have with media and government in the US, but I’m working on it. It’s worth the time to research.

Repost from @shaunking: “Kameron Prescott. Just 6 years old. The youngest person shot & killed by American police in 2017. His family is devastated. Police literally shot through Kameron's home - claiming that they aimed to hit another woman - who also turned out to be unarmed. They killed her too. Kameron's family didn't even know the other woman who was killed by police.” Just a reminder... we have a lot of work to do. #blacklivesmatter #heretostay #nobannowall #IndigenousLand #criminaljusticereform

Repost malfunction: Leaving Puebla/Cholula today! Such a beautiful city/area with a rich, complex history. So much different than Mexico City and far different from Oaxaca. The people of Mexico are super diverse, something that we fail to acknowledge or learn in the U.S. One of my favorite moments was eating breakfast with iconic revolutionary Emiliano Zapata looking down over us. Another was walking through the tunnels below the The Great Pyramid of Cholula, also known as Tlachihualtepetl (apparently the largest pyramid known to exist in the world!) and then climbing up to the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (which was built atop the native temple metaphoric reminder of oppression FOR ME, but I’ll save that for another post) and seeing the 360 view with beautiful volcanoes! Thank you @bricialopez & your amazing Oaxaqueño Zapoteco familia for being so hospitable and including me on the adventures! (hat in video from @iamanimmigrant campaign) As far as a call to action, my dear friend @eandiola and other Dreamers are still in jail risking deportation (but many are working to have them be released), standing for undocumented ppl who are being attacked! Ice apparently has been notified and I’m worried. Please amplify the story of the #Dream7 and the #NoDreamNoDeal movement! Follow @undocumedia & @seed.project and repost on all social media. In general, undocumented families, and refugees are still being torn apart and human rights violated, so let’s do all we can to protect the undocumented communities. Also, go to bit.ly/RTKAvote to demand that NY city council hold bad police accountable! Vote YES on intro 541 and NO on intro 182 (via @lavernecox)

SWIPE LEFT! Went to Monte Albán today! Beautiful reminder of the history of the Zapotec & Mixtec from which this land was stolen. Some of these amazing structures were damaged in the earthquake, a reminder of the tragedy that took so many people’s homes and lives a very short time ago. So I was glad that @oaxacking took me to a @unamanoparaoaxaca fundraiser where they were raising money to build ovens that were lost for the Zapotec people in rural Oaxaca. With the loss of those ovens, they lost work. No work means no income. Check out the work they are doing to revive these communities and donate or get involved. And thank you @susanatrilling @marioterresr @kaelinulrich for the wonderful food provided, @tlalocguerrero (who’s family lost their home in the earthquake) for the BEAUTIFUL music, and endless thanks to the org for the work done providing ovens and other relief for the earthquake victims!

He llegado a Oaxaca (Swipe left!) I chose Oaxaca for the spirit of activism, and celebrating the indigenous and Afro-Oaxaqueños (Afro-Mexicanos). This town atop the mountain is Benito Juárez named after the first (and only) indigenous President of Mexico. Check out my IG story for more. And for actionable items to fight this latest decision to repeal Net Neutrality and a great article on the severe underreporting of police killings. #solidaritytrip #Mexico #Oaxaca #blacklivesmatter #heretostay 🖤

I fell in love with Frida Khalo today. I hung out at her & Diego’s house today, Casa Azul (Museo Frida Kahlo). Oh, yes, Diego RIVERA... yeah we go way back. Anywho, (SWIPE LEFT) this is a perfect example of a woman of color being a leader in the resistance, in lifting up oppressed and marginalized voices. One of her highest priorities was the mission to lift up indigenous women from Oaxaca. From her disability to her identity crisis and her mixed ethnic background, from her physical pain to her emotional pain, she turned obstacles into advantages. Her entire lifestyle was art and protest. Every aspect. That, coupled with the Doug Jones win in Alabama (because of POC, particularly black women) drove home how much we MUST put women of color at the center of leadership. Because women of color (black, native, Latina) are by far the most oppressed in this country, we must put our focus on liberating and uplifting THEM. Center them. Put them in leadership. If we liberate the MOST oppressed people group, then by default all other forms of oppression must be dismantled. And who knows better about the experience of (and how to liberate the) most oppressed than women of color?! Center them. As a people group, in life, they show up to the plate EVERY TIME and knock it out of the park. And they are the glossed over organizers of EVERY progressive MOVEMENT. Our politicians have been taking the opposite approach for EVER: focus on what oppresses us all (i.e. economic) and we’ll get to the more specific issues later (i.e. racial, gender, trans, native, disabilities etc.) LATER. NEVER. COMES. And it allows us to center those who are least oppressed: white straight men. Let’s change that. What’s the definition of insanity? ...I rest my case. #FridaKhalo #WomenofColor #DiegoRivera #POC Don’t forget to swipe left (that last pic is Trosky, Rivera & Khalo ) P.S. last point, part of the exhibit was how people appropriate Frida’s image, and it reminded me of how politicians basically appropriate our vote during elections. Food for thought.

What did y’all think about last night’s episode?! #TheFlash Also, swipe left!! Let’s not forget about the #OurDream movement, we need a budget that includes a CLEAN #DreamActNOW we need as many Congress reps to demand and pledge a clean #DreamACT as possible. Good news: from @eandiola “BREAKING: After 30+ #OurDream sit-ins across country, today leaders of the largest Dem caucus released a letter calling on their colleagues to vote against any continuing resolution that doesn't include a clean #DreamAct. We call on every Dem to join them & pledge #NoDreamNoDeal!” Let’s push them to protect our dreamers and #saveTPS We need to demand that the criminal justice system (DOJ, border patrol, detention centers, local police etc) work to PROTECT our Black, Brown, and immigrant sisters and brothers (and Muslim and trans as well) instead of TARGETING them. Let’s stand together. Blessings. Last thing: pray for those affected by the fires in Ventura and surrounding areas including LA. Sending love and light.

Love you @rosariodawson & @akkleini ️ These are Rosario’s words I stole from her post: 1 in 3 girls/women the world round, (#1BillionRising) will be abused/beaten/raped/killed in their lifetimes. Our boys & men suffer tremendous abuse- sexual/psychological/physical, too, as well as our LGBTQI family who are forgotten in the accepted CIS gender narrative.Institutionalized racism/sexism/classicism enables slavery in our prison systems, w/ auction block slavery in Libya & indentured servitude/human/sex trafficking everywhere. The FBI says wherever drugs are sold, children are sold. Environmental injustice cont.'s to exacerbate this for everyone as we now have 10's of millions of war/climate change refugees.People are being labeled illegal while a robot designated as female has been granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia. Looking at the news it seems we've lost our connection to Mother Earth & the divine sacred. There is so much pain & suffering going on in this world...& yet...so much Love, Resolve, Resilience, Vigilance & Persistence! To hold up ones pain does not discredit/negate another's.We've too long been divided along those lines, being shut down so we don't learn about another's experience, don't speak up for ourselves/others, or get so provoked that we lose empathy & instead turn on ourselves/each other, righteously enraged or dispassionate-negating needs/wants/desires as less important than our own. That's how the violence perpetuates. That's how it has even existed at all. This isn't about competing or comparing pain but instead hopefully about appreciating/standing up for & uplifting ourselves & each other in our shared struggles.I'm grateful to be alive & present so that I may sit in the circle of humanity & listen, learn & share my & all of our stories. Please hold space for each other,me & you, & I too will hold space for me & you. That is one of many ways we can honor & love ourselves & each other.Take a deep breath. It is the anchor to our life.Connect to your breath, your self, your environment.Start there. Our ancestors are with us.The 7 generations before us & beyond want/need/depend on us.Listen.Answer the call.It can be heard in the beat of your heart
