#Ad - A morning jog in this cold winter weather is thirsty work. I brought my bottle of AQUA Carpatica - nature’s perfect pure water which is virtually nitrate free. Last night I saw Cirque du Soleil which premiered TOTEM at The Royal Albert Hall in support of the charity Sentebale. I’ve wanted to see Cirque du Soleil forever & last night was truly magical, I was totally blown away! It was pure escapism - the music, the scenography, the venue & the undiluted talent! For 2 hours I watched excellence - it was so incredibly inspiring. I watched people’s face as they were leaving the theatre afterwards & literally everyone was beaming - a performance which united & thrilled. Highly, highly recommend visiting! 🥰 TOTEM On an island evoking the shape of a giant turtle, TOTEM traces the fascinating journey of mankind from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. I hope you all thoroughly enjoyed the festive season. It may have been an indulgent one (rightly so!) but there comes a time to re-focus, transition off the mince pies, & to re-establish health-mode. I’m guessing there are a few surplus Brussel sprouts knocking about at present (either in your fridge or at the supermarket); this ‘Sprout, Apple & Barley Salad‘ is an explosion of colour & taste which happens to take advantage of these little Christmassy miracle orbs! Brussel Sprouts are super healthy (ultra-low GI, almost calorie-free, low in saturated fat, cholesterol-lowering properties, a very good source of dietary fibre & most vitamins like A, C, K, B6). This is a delicious & easy-to-make salad which can be enjoyed anytime of the year, either hot or cold, but is a particularly good transition now the xmas glut is over! After a relaxing Xmas it’s time to get back into fitness mode Why not kick it off with some Functional training?! This involves bodyweight exercises that help to teach your body to handle it’s own weight, placing emphasis on multi-joint movements rather than trying to isolate a specific muscle. The result of this is to strengthen the core muscles & lift your ‘body awareness’, posture and balance by adding stability to the musculoskeletal system. A byproduct of improving muscular balance is to help prevent injuring more fragile parts of your body too, as well as using more of your existing muscle mass whilst exercising which promotes quicker calorie burn, more weight loss, and therefore improves the composition of your body! Pull-ups One of the most difficult exercises to master but also one of the most effective exercises for building back & upper strength. If you’re struggling then Negative Pullups are a great tool. You can do this by holding your body in the ‘up’ position of the pull-up with your chin above the bar for as long as possible & then slowly, with control, lower down to a hanging position. Mince pies, mulled wine, gingerbread men - the festive season is unequivocally here & the time to train is NOW; that, way whatever excess you’re consuming, at least you’re using 🥊 Is as fuel to burn it off at the gym! ALCOHOL’S EFFECT ON TRAINING? Alcohol can stop you reaching your fitness goals in many ways including by dampening performance, recovery & focus. Although it’s absorbed quickly, it metabolises slowly & can still affect the system up to 48 hours after consumption. It decreases strength, dehydrates (damaging to the kidney), exhausts the body (impairs liver function, as it metabolises alcohol at the expense of glycogen), disturbs sleep (crucial for muscle recovery), slows down reaction time, disrupts the body’s balance & coordination, impedes cardio exercise (raises blood pressure so the heart works harder to pump blood through the body) to name a few... Structuring your fitness goals is paramount in order to reach them! ———————————————————————— BE S.M.A.R.T. ABOUT IT! Think ‘SMART’ when authoring your goals. (Structured, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic & Time-bound) 5 components of organised goal-setting which will lead them to be more readily achieved. Structured – simply, when are you going to do it, piece by piece, & when will you achieve the end-game? Calculate & break down the increments, & then diarise them. Measurable – Think about how you’ll measure you progress, whether its an amount of weight you want to lift, the number of repetitions, distance run, intensity, speed etc, a spatial measurement you want to achieve, a weight you want to lose/gain. i) Take notes on how you feel; how did the session go, did you feel tired, was it easy, how did your body/muscles feel the the next few days? In time, you can return to your notes, see how the you’ve grown stronger, & notice how your recovery has improved. The notes may also relate to other components, such as not eating enough or not getting enough sleep the night before. ii) MyFinessPal is great to keep track of your food intake, calories, macros (fats / carbs / protein) as well as helping to identify if you’re lacking anything on a regular basis. iii) Take photos as you go along, once a week same time, same day, front, side & back. Take measurements, how do you clothes fit?  Achievable (or Actionable) – Set achievable goals; can you actually get to the gym 6 days a week – if not, diarise 2 or 3 sessions, per achievability, & then stick to it! Realistic – this ties in with achievable, setting realistic expectations of oneself, not expecting to observe progress within an unrealistic time frame, being sensible & balanced about your application to the cause! Time-bound Training – Finally what are you actually doing once you get to the gym. Plan that 1-hour of time well in advance; going back to point one – ensure it’s a structured approach. Knowing what you’re doing within the session will enable you to set a further-out time #fitnessontoast #fitin3

This morning I had a little bit more time so enjoyed (and photographed) this pot of goodness - a Fage Total Split Pot! Fage's macro breakdown is pretty good - high in protein (8.3g of protein per 100g) and reduced sugar (7.6g per 100g). It leaves me feeling satisfied and more often than not I have little left over to enjoy as a snack later in the day. With the right soil they are tough little guys & can stand temperatures down to -40°C. I’ve wanted to go to see this exhibition for years & last night I finally did. I was totally blown away. The human body is fascinating - complex, vulnerable yet resilient. It’s the home we live in our entire lives, yet many of us know so little about it. We take it for granted and only appreciate it when things go wrong. Walking around brought out the excited little geeky anatomy kid in me & I could’ve stayed there for hours. I truly believe this is the most inspiring insight into the body, seeing these human bodies, three dimensional, each layer peeled back was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Incredible, beautiful, overwhelming. Leaving, I felt even more in awe of the body, I cannot wait to go back! @bodyworldsldn #fitnessontoast #fitin3 #bodyworlds @rottenroach 🧥 @hm
