Sometimes the trail in the backyard does the job. Other times you need a glacial moraine. Good times in the Alaskan backcountry..

Mount Jackson and a sea of clouds at its base. Lately, the valleys have been socked in the clouds while the alpine has been basking in the sun. It’s like seeing the world from an airplane window but you’re on your skis..

I’ll be honest, time-lapse photography is a craft I’ve never dove into until recently. Not for lack of wanting though. I figured they would be a disconnect between the time-lapses I envisioned and the ones I had the know-how to execute. I also imagined there would be some of you in the same boat- intrigued about it but unsure of how make it right. So I called up long time buddy @cdelehanty and offered him to make a workshop together. He spent the better part of 3 years roaming Northern California making the Project Yosemite time-lapse film and honing his skills. He is world class at it and in the workshop he shares everything he knows- including : seeing the world as time-lapse frames, using sliders and pan tilt heads, doing astro lapses, what intervals for specific shots, and what gear to use. Our new workshop drops feb 10- sign up at the link in bio to get free episodes, bonuses and exclusive access. by @cdelehanty, filmed over 7 years.

Oh the winter light. Pretty sure this is my favourite light- mid winter, up north, right after sunset.. As much as I love shooting it, I’ve made it a point in 2019 and beyond to push myself to shoot in whatever light conditions. Story first, light second..

Following a herd of bison for the day. Just made a new 5mn workshop for @fnac_officiel with the Canon EOS R and a handful of new lenses. In it I dive into the importance of timing -how being at the right time at the right place is a big part of photography. It’s free to watch on their YouTube, link in bio. Oh and there’s a catch- it’s in French! It’s actually my first language and I’ve loved the challenge of making this film in it. You might want to turn on the subtitles on YouTube ..

A mad morning in the hills of Glacier Park. So happy I get to spend the next month here at home. Travelling is a massive privilege but spending time in familiar places is underrated..

Ending another winder day watching the alpenglow on Rainbow Peak. As I sit here writing this, big snow flakes are falling out of the window. Love this season!

The first (and probably last) time this glacial moraine is ridden. Had dreamed of getting a shot of two riders with an ice field in the back. Its the last place you’d expect to see a mountain bike and that’s what made it interesting and fun..

The Knik Glacier. We spent a few days here, mountain biking improbable lines and kayaking under skimpy ice bridges. As much as I enjoy the peacefulness of winter I love the hectic-ness of summer..

That windy winter night where we drove a car on a frozen lake. We drilled and secured an area the size of a football field where the ice looked the strongest to make sure it could handle the 6600 lbs of the car. The best part is that a snowstorm buried the ice under 3 inches of snow. So on the night of the shoot we had to sweep the surface with makeshift brooms and shovels! The whole thing got pretty ridiculous but glad the concept came together

Spent some quality time with a herd of bison today. In this busy and connected day and age it feels good to devote an entire day to something as simple as looking for animals. On assignment for @canonusa with the #EOSR + Canon EF 100mm 2.8 L Macro

Looking back on an afternoon well spent. Started with a sketchy surf session on a rock break, looked at the sunset and built an all natural campfire. Love living at the locals pace for a day or two.

Two first times in one photo. First time I see a coyote come so close to my lens. First time walking through the meadows of Yosemite. Been waiting for years for this moment! A couple things I noticed: 1. The scale of this valley is nigh on impossible to show in photos 2. They’ve done an impressive job at hiding the roads, parking lots and hotels. You can barely see them from high up. 3. Everyone is constantly looking up at the walls around. 4. I feel like the best way to experience this valley would be to walk its entire length with a few close buddies.

Slowly learning the traditions of my country of adoption! I like thanksgiving, reflecting on what we’re grateful for is quite grounding and healthy. I think the nicest part about is that it brings people together and it makes us focus on who’s around us. So happy thanksgiving! I’m grateful for every single one of you.

Yukon Territory. I remember this flight in the back of a tiny Cessna, we flew over the Kluane Glacier. It was ridge-line after ridge-ligne, deep blue pools in the ice, for miles. Basically a dream. But what will outlast any memory from that flight is this small lake on the way back to the airfield. It summed up the immensity of the Yukon for me.

The windswept front range of the Canadian Rockies. This region has a bit of bipolar disorder, it can go from dead calm to utter chaos in a matter of hours when the wind picks up. That’s why I keep coming back!

The rainforest of coastal British Columbia. Got really inspired to go into the archive looking for forest images after seeing the movie “Treeline” at the Banff Film Festival last weekend.. It’s the most beautiful film I’ve seen this year. Here’s the trailer if you’re curious https://youtu.be/VAuFIf2dNHk - or just google treeline Patagonia film. It will make you appreciate every tree much more

LIFE UPDATE. For those of you who’ve been following @strohlalex you know that Andrea and I have been building our first home. I hesitated to share this here but it has been such a long (3 years..), exhausting, difficult, but rewarding project and we’ve learned so much along the way that I thought I’d open up. In case some of you are at a place in life to buy your first house and can benefit from this. I’m planning to make a few videos about the mistakes we’ve made and what we’ve learned on YouTube in the coming months. In the meantime, here’s a little house tour. Is there anything you’d like me to cover in the video series about the build?

The evening surf on the wild coast of Portugal. After spending a month on the south west coast of France, landing in Portugal was a treat. Empty beaches, barreling waves and a warm breeze coming straight from Africa. This coast is worth a detour...

Basecamp in the Cabinet Mountains; Warming by the fire after a cold fall day in the hills. There was so many things I wanted to move before taking this photo: the hats, the bags, the camelback.. Then I realized I’d be making an idealized version of a campsite, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But as humans we have flaws, can be messy and this campsite is just a reflection of that. Ps. Did you see the yellow Thermarest transformers chair?

Counting the days before the snow covers the forest floor.. From a spontaneous moto ride with @isaacsjohnston and @elibclark through yellow larches and tight single tracks.. I don’t know that would have ever imagined living in a place with this terrain 30mn from the house.

Enjoyed this weekend spent by the ocean, felt like a full reset. Got me thinking about the notion of adaptability - often I hear other photographers say they “hate” shooting a certain environment. I think it’s normal to have personal preferences but it’s also healthy to embrace everything else outside of that comfort zone.. Making something out of any environment or condition is also part of the craft.. That’s it for tonight
